I was wondering about those bariatric fusions? They r supposed to have all the vitamins we need all in one. Seems soo much cheaper!

No, no, no! Stay away from them. Here's why.

They tell you that you only have to take four a day. But the ASMBS says that after a gastric bypass, we need about 200% of the recommended daily allowance of most vitamins and minerals. Four Bariatric Fusion give you 200% of some stuff, including vitamin C, D, thiamin, folic acid and biotin. But four only gives you 100% of a bunch of important stuff, like vitamin E, riboflavin, niacin, and B6. You'd really have to take eight a day to get the 200% that you need.

Then they tell you that you won't need to take additional calcium if you take then, right? But after a gastric bypass we need calcium citrate, because we can't absorb calcium carbonate well at all. There was a study in the New England Journal of Medicine that said we only absorb about 4% of the calcium from calcium carbonate. So that's no good. Well, Bariatric Fusion contains some calcium citrate, but it contains some calcium carbonate. And they don't tell you how much of which they contain. So you know you would have to take some additional calcium citrate, but you have no way of figuring out how much.

Then they tell you that you won't need to take additional iron, because they have lots of iron. But calcium interferes with the absorption of iron. And they contain lots of calcium. So (even though it's the wrong kind of calcium) the calcium will keep you from absorbing that iron. So you would still need to take additional iron.

Then they tell you that you won't need to take a B12 supplement because they contain lots of B12. But we need something called intrinsic factor in order to absorb B12 that we eat or swallow. And after a gastric bypass, we don't have that intrinsic factor in our stomach anymore. That's why we need to use a sublingual B12. Or we can use the patch, or the nasal spray, or take a shot. But we can't absorb B12 from a multi that we chew and swallow.

So if you want to use Bariatric Fusion for your multi, you can, but you need to take eight a day. And you still need to take extra calcium, iron, and and B12.

Kelly

Oh, and that would cost you $50 a month, to take eight a day. Plus whatever your calcium and iron and B12 costs.

I was actually thrilled to be starting my liquid diet. I couldn't wait to get up and drink my first protein shake. I think I was just so excited to be so close to surgery, finally. I will say that the thrill did kinda wear off partway through the day...

Well, Kelly! Thank you for all the info... It did sound too good to be true! So I will stick the route Im going..

Well, looks like I made it today thru this diet. I am NOT gonna cheat at all. Ive made this promise to myself.. If I cant last thru this..How would I last after surgery..Ive gotta have the will. And I know I will do it..

So when I wake up tomorow..4 more days! Plus, I know once ketosis hits, Ill pretty much lose my appetite anyway.

Its my health at stake, and its time I took control. I feel so liberated.

Well hello everyone.. I am making thru day 2 of this 'protein sparing modified fast' But not without a couple bouts of the runs! Im thinking its because Im drinking lots of liquids and not eating crap. My body may just be cleaning itself out. Which is maybe why my Dr doesnt do a bowel cleanse? I cant believe my surgery is on Tuesday..4 days away. I keep feeling like someone is gonna pull the rug out from under me at any moment.

I did end up getting a major headache lastnight. I have been fine today..hope it doesnt happen again!

Hey Kasey!

Whoo! Four more days! God, you must be so excited. I'm speculating that the headache might be from stress and not eating like you're used to eating. Just think; you might think that what you're eating is not that much and then when you get the surgery, you realize how much you eat. Personally, that's what I'm looking forward to (well, besides weight loss and health stuff )

You'll be awesome and you're surgeon knows you, so you'll probably be fine during the operation.

*hugs*
Axel
