Hi Marc,

Thank you so much for writing what you've gone through for the first few weeks. The details - good and bad - really gave me insight to the process. I'm about your previous size and look forward to future results. I have surgery on Tuesday April 28th. I'm very interested in your future posts as well.

Congratulations on your weight loss and life improvement, man!

Big Zack

Default It's a Good Life

Well it’s been one month & a few days since my surgery and it’s been an interesting journey so far. Some things were harder than I expected, some were easier (like not drinking with a meal) then I thought, and in some ways I guess I expected more…but who doesn’t?

So, I thought I’d write a few things about how my journey has gone so far:
I started by reading my first posts over…and found some interesting things.
First off, unlike my first post I wrote. I was lying to myself in that post. It says I didn’t over indulge a lot on weekends because we’re “active family” Active is a very truthful part, but after seeing what I eat now I realize that a typical Friday was TGIF! Time for a Fish Fry, and French fries and a few sugary drinks, maybe some dessert…oh it’s now 9:30, let’s watch a movie and make some popcorn or other crappy food. Saturday..”hey we’re busy family, left over pizza? Sure why not, we’re busy at noon, well let’s get subway, but I’ll take a bag o sun chips please and a large diet soda and “let’s eat that whole thing in 15 minutes. Sunday…hey before Sunday school how about I go get us some Ham and Rolls..of course you need cheese and ketchup on that…and of course MY KIDS (not me) want donut’s…oh wait..you don’t want that donut? Well let dad help!

After a month of not doing the above paragraph I realized..how many weekends did I do JUST the above EVERY weekend. Do that 52 weekends a year and you bet your gonna gain weight! It took taking food away from me for me to see, in Reality what I was doing….so When you read my first post..it was my reality at the time I wrote it..but it was a reality skewed.
My last meal as I wrote in my first post was a DELICOUS decadent salad I had; inhaling it in my car in 15 minutes…this SALAD had every good thing on it, chicken, strawberries, cheese, oranges it is awesome it sounds healthy but it oh so is not, then a honey vinaigrette. I go back and read my first post how I ate this HUGE salad in 15 minutes and realize, no wonder I’m FAT. AS stated in Napoleon Dynamite “Tina you fat lard, come get your dinner!” That was me, I shoveled that last meal in my face. If I ordered that same meal now,,I’d slowly chew my food, enjoy it, picking the chicken first and asking for the dressing on the side so I could oh so lightly ad enough just to ad flavor..and literally 95% of it would come home in a doggy bag..how the hell was I able to shove that huge last meal in my mouth in 15 minutes!!!…god I’m glad RNY is a punishment to retrain the brain and the body!

Other areas I now find I’m not able (I’m certainly still tempted) in other words, the mind is willing but the RNY made the stomach weak -

#1. My kids plates… oh we had a healthy dinner,,but , What’s this, My daughter Marina didn’t finish her chicken and corn…well push that plate over hear..I can help! I don’t do that any more..I physically can’t!

#2. Ketchup….I admit it I’m a KETCHAHOLIC. Everything taste’s better with Ketchup! But with my new 100% Protein diet I have been ketchup free for 34 days. Thank you..it takes a big man to admit an addiction. That is definitely the longest I have been without ketchup in my entire life! The real reason I now won’t have it? It’s got that FRIGGIN Fructose Corn syrup that is in EVERYTHING. & I still have not found out what its like in that first ALIEN movie where the alien get’s ripped out of the stomach of the guy laying on the table..I refer of course to “dumping” I have not had it yet nor do I want to, but I thought Ketchup is a sure fire direct path to shitting my pants, sweating and praying god for forgiveness…I’d prefer not to find that out. But I can’t believe it!!!! There is life after Ketchup!

#3. Life with kids. 3 kids 9, 6, 5. Hard to watch them eat all the things they love. I just sigh and watch them enjoy it. I quite honestly have asked my oldest to eat the first bite of his Pizza or hamburger slowly so I can watch how he enjoys it…Yes, he thinks I’m a freak..but I’m his daddy freak. (I hope he will not have to attend therapy)

#4. Social gatherings, Having a full time day job, owning a couple Sport Clip Haircuts franchises on top of that I have been in MANY social gatherings since I had the surgery. I just hold the line (in earlier post’s why I don’t share with others my surgery), tell em I had Hernia and some intestine removed and that I can’t eat normal just yet. Order myself a piece of chicken, eat a few bites and throw the rest away. At parties. I’ve been trying to drink 32 oz’s of water right before I get to the event…but I have stumbled: 2 bacon wrapped water chestnuts on Easter, This past weekend 20 to 30 LITTLE pretzels straights over an hour time period. God if felt good to cheat! I wanted more. Both times Had to stop my brain from hurting my progress.

_______My disappointments:

A. I thought I’d be thinner 34 days out! Doctor had a different weight I started at, I took weight at home morning of surgery and state I was at 306. That is my starting point from my scale. At 34 days I’m at 280... That’s 26 lbs… I’ve read of people losing 30-35 40 lbs in first month I thought that would be me! I am so thankful I went the RNY route instead of Lap Band knowing this weight loss smaller then I expected.

The last 2.5 weeks I’ve been averaging 3 lbs lost per week. I honestly thought I’d be in the 4-5 lbs weight loss a week for a few months. I’ll let you know if that weight loss slows.

I’ve been a good boy on the diet, and exercise has been hard for past month as here in Wisconsin it’s probably rained and been below 40 for 24 of the last 30 days, We now finally see warmer weather which is good, because LOVING exercise and having healed more I can now push my exercise back up.

B. Wow, not much variety to eat..I’ll be searching the boards to find out what advice I can get on new items to eat.

__________ My Rewards
A. Starting to have more energy

B.I feel a little more comfortable in my skin, hard to explain but those who’ve had surgery know.

C.People noticing weight loss on face, not really in body yet

D.I can see a bit of my weiner down their again!! Hey little buddy been a while since I saw you!

E.I’m peeing stronger…don’t know why but helps

F.I’m learning what a lean protein diet is and how to remedy years of bad choices

G.I hope with increased exercise of weight lifting, biking, swimming and walking I’ll finally ramp up my metabolism and added with the WLS surgery I’ll get back up to 4-5 lbs lost per week…we shall see and only my future posts will tell the answer to that journey!

I wish all of you the best of luck in your WLS journey as well….this post is kind of my therapy for myself to learn who I am, where I’ve come from and where I’m going…and as I read my first post already and realized in writing this one that I LIED To myself….well then I am excited to read this post a month from now and see how my life has changed in that time frame as well,
not only physically but mentally as well.

Best of Luck to all of you and it truly is “A Good Life” Marc.

Default I think my pictures scared everyone

Taking the tough road, will post pictures every month of my progress, I must have scared everyone away from my last post with pictures!

My goal, to not be embarrased with a shirt off around my pool, in the hot tub, or at the beach. Being almost May 1st, I think I'll fall short of that goal by August, but only time will tell!

Default Wow mark

Sorry I missed this thread. I must have been traveling or something. Just read through it from the beginning. Sounds like you are on track.

The things on your bucket list were on mine too:

Ive had a m/c license since I was 18 years old, and have ridden many Harleys.
Im an instrument rated pilot - not current at the moment but still I get the check box. Have owned two airplanes. C-182 and C-210
I play guitar and am a passable tenor.

Now about my bucket list:
1) Attend a game in every Major League baseball park in the USA.
2) Around the world trip on the Queen Mary
3) Trade houses with someone in the south of France for one year.
4) Learn to speak Spanish.
5) Shrink to 185 lbs.
6) Buy a yacht and motor the "Inside Loop"

Dang, this is gonna be expensive... I better get busy...

Default 1 day short of 6 weeks. & I ran!

Well not for long distance...but Haven't run for 5 years since I did my last spring Triathlon. I actually ran...now didn't run far...a block maybe,,,then walk fast then run again then walk...but considering 6 weeks ago I thougth an alien was going to pounce from my chest and fart the whole way he came out..I felt good.

I feel all the blubber a shaking..but it will be fun to see how it feels as it dissapears. 6 weeks after surgery and I actually ran! wow.

I'll post my 6 week update of weight and pictures in the next day or 2. I'm hoping to get past the 30 lb marker...I seem to be losing slower then I thought. But doc states it may be amount of excercise I'm doing is restructuring my body... I'll let you decide when I take the new pictures tomorrow. Don't think I'm ready for the thong picture test yet though.
