Yep, your poop tells a story of your health an what you have eaten....try eating beets cooked fresh from raw state.....voila! Purple poop.
White and chalky...calcium issues, medication side effects, eating rocks
Black and tarry indicates upper GI bleed
Bright red streaks....lower GI bleed or hemorrhoids
Soft, ropey, long, and light brown to dark brown...good
Soft, formed stool that separates...no as good as ropey and within normal
Dark and greenish...iron not getting processed
Hard pebbles, on way to constipation....medications side effect, lack of fiber, lack of water
Watery with specks....diarrhea, danger of electrolyte imbalances
Fatty streaks...orlistat or fat problems
Lots of green and smelly....gallbladder problems
Garlic...well, guess what you ate last night......
Rotten eggs....digestive enzymes or lack of good bacteria....eatin beans or eggs....
Loose and mushy....too much roughage, undigested veggies, beans.....
Lots can be said about poop

Greeninsh? Really?! If I eat a lot of salad now, my poop is greenish. My poop also has a metal smell a lot. Anyone have a clue about that?

Dogs will eat their poop if you are feeding them a food with a lot of corn in it. Corn isn't good for dogs or cats, BTW. The higher quality pet foods don't have it as an ingredient.
Great thread Vim. You do come up with the strangest (but interesting) stuff.

Actually, most puppies eat their poop because they can. LOL Some say they also do that b/c they aren't getting enough nutrition in their diet. I used to feed Baby Royal Canin which has corn in it, but learned that it's not a quality food and she was itchy. I feed her Innova dry and Evangers wet now. There's no nasty stuff in there!

Yes, that was exactly my point...they eat it because they aren't getting enough nutrition from the low quality (corn filled) foods.
As I'm fond of saying, corn is what farmers use to fatten up their cattle. Other than that, it doesn't have much positive purpose as a food for humans or animals. (Although I do love a fresh ear of corn slathered with butter!)
My co-worker has a dog that is having major skin issues, and I suggested to her that it is probably because of what they're feeding the dog. She's too cheap to buy decent food though, and just gives a dog a Benadryl pill every day. One of my cat's has bad food allergies, and because of that, I feed all 3 of them California Naturals chicken and rice formula now. Making that change took care of his skin issues, and several times a day puking problem.
Oops, sorry for hijacking this thread! Now back to our poop discussion!

No real hijack Sherry!
It just goes to prove the "quality" of our stools.
My dogs are thrilled to find horse shit every now and then, more for the smell and flavour rather than eating it all... Grosses me out each time but I know it is normal.
All this "motion" topic has taken me on a new ride of discovery. We know so very little about our bodies!
Now my next thoughts is on "timing" - sometimes evacuation is predictably on time and depending on other consumed foods, our visit to the "loo" (john for you Americans!) is delayed by several hours! Why? Insufficient hydration or lack of exercise or both?
Thanks for participating - it makes me feel slightly more "normal" - I have ALWAYS produced strange stuff but thanks for referring to it as "interesting" - you made my day!
Cheers,
Vim

This past weekend, I went beyond "on the way to constipation"... TMI warning, don't read if you are at all easily grossed out (though if you are, why you'd be reading a Poop post is beyond me! LOL)
I regularly take one or two sennekot pills daily as since my surgery I am always constipated. From Wednesday when I arrived at my mom's until Sunday, I had nothing happening and to say I was uncomfortable is an understatement. Saturday night I took a regular laxative and sunday AM, the urge to go was there, but the stool itself was too large and I couldn't pass it. My mom handed me an enema.. and for a good amount of time, STILL nothing. I thought I was going to end up in the ER. Finally, I was able to 'go', though it was almost as painful as childbirth and it still hurts to sit, three days later.
I just don't know what more I can do.. I've upped my fiber supplements, I've upped my fluids.. I take the stool softeners.
I tried the miralax as it came highly recommended and it didn't do anything for me and I cannot stand the way it tastes/feels on my tongue, it makes me gag. If I felt it did something, then I would tolerate it, but since it doesn't, I stopped taking it.
I don't know what more I can do, other than not wait so long to take another laxative.

hey Kel i was just saying my son (6) can only poop like once a week adn our doc recomended that too, but NADA it doesnt work they suggested take the milk of magnesia to "clean him out" i didnt try that yet but i hear it works. And he too has really LARGE ones and it so painful for him and to hear him grunting and then he cries cause it gets stuck. i'm sorry i bet that is just as bad as my condition. but try the milk of magnesia and then after your "cleaned out" take 1 1/2 doses of the miralax a day
