My hair is falling out. I can barely type this because the tears are flowing so hard. I'm to the point where I don't even want to get in the shower because every time I do, clumps come out. I'm so depressed. All I do is cry
Will it come back? And if so, when?

hair loss on the boards
There are quite a few people who had some hair loss, you've probably found those threads? I haven't heard of a single story of anyone on here who was permanently hairless (but I could have not read about it so don't quote me).
Nutrition plays a part in the hair loss. The body needs nutrients for healthy hair, skin, nails, organs, everything. There are other causes of hair loss: low thyroid is one. When you have bloodwork done they can check your thyroid panel just to see if you have hypothyroidism. Google hypothyroidism for the other symptoms, but it's more than likely the hair loss is the same cause as some people post-WLS. The body is adjusting hugely, and what you put in your body is what sustains it.
I don't know the mechanics of exactly what hormone or vitamin or whatever it is that CAUSES the hair loss, but I do understand it to be caused by the restricted diet. It grows back when your body is filled with nutrients, vitamins and minerals.
Others who know more will post, but in the meanwhile you can search the threads on hair loss - and I'll bet you that none of the people who had some loss are bald today. So buck up. It's not permanent and you can use this as another motivation to keeping working hard on the issues of your intake of everything right? Right. (Vanity can be a helluva motivator, sometimes it's the KEY one!)

I've been able to get my protein in pretty much from week 1-2...but I'm still losing hair like C-R-A-Z-Y!! And I hate washing my hair in the morning...I get at least 30+ hairs tangled in my fingers...and lose more throughout the day...YIKES! But I had lots and lots and lots of little sprouts all over (thank goodness) but I can't do a thing with my hair now!
About your depression...please talk to your doctor...this new life of ours is hard enough without having a clear mind and a good outlook. Depression runs in my family...so I'm just concerned for you.
By the way...how is Danita doing? Sure hope all is going well for her. And hope things look up for you soon!

Thanks for your concern, but there's no need to worry. I have already spoken to my doctor and I have anti-depressant meds. It doesn't matter though, because when my hair is falling out in clumps, no amount of meds are gonna stop that kind of pain for me. I'm doing my protein, I'm doing my nutrients & vitamins but we all know that hair loss is a fact of this surgery. I'm just hitting that stage right now and it's hard. I just hope it stops before I end up looking like Friar Tuck.
I'm crossing my fingers for you Kathy, that you don't lose too much more of your own hair!
Is there a timeframe for the hairloss stage?

Danita is doing a lot better now, thanks. She still gets crampy and gassy when she eats and drinks but she's not experiencing the pain that she did when this first happened. It seems that she's going about 2 days without having a B.M. so when she realizes that, she takes some milk of magnesia and that seems to get things going again. Poor thing.

Oh sweetie, you know this is temporary. I asked my buddy who had this done two years ago if she lost her hair. She said she did, but it all grew back. I had a similar thing happen to me after I had my twins. I was losing weight like crazy (baby twins and a two year old at the time--no time to sleep, eat, or even go to the bathroom) and my hair was falling out in clumps. I had beautiful strong nails when I was pregnant, and they were gone too.
Well, fast forward: my babies are 19 and 22. Even though I've gone through menopause, I still have a really good head of hair. In fact, my hair was always straight. It curls now. The only thing is now I have some grey, but not a lot. But hey, at least it's there.
You'll be fine. If you need to cry, go for it. Let it out. It's just part of the whole process. Look at it this way: you are mourning the loss of a 'friend' (who was really your enemy). You've got a lot of support here and with Danita. It'll get better, especially when you look at yourself in the mirror in six months.

Thanks Vicki...your kind words warmed my heart and made my eyes water. I really appreciate that. I guess I'll just cry and try to hold on.
Deb~
Hey girl, Danita isn't losing her hair AT ALL! I put dreadlocks in her hair so I wonder if that is helping her to not lose it. I was starting to think that maybe black women don't lose their hair like other women do, but I guess that's not true since you said that yours is falling out too. I guess all we can do is pray and keep it movin, right? God this sucks.

I am two weeks ahead of you...and my hair is coming out in clumps too. I get my protein most of the time, but I hate taking a shower, it depresses me everything more hair goes down the drain...oh and I had to go buy DRANO because my hair is cloggin up the drain. Girl I feel that pain, and I am just hoping things get better as I get to eating more protein in my meals.

i was hoping the same thing that black women didnt loose their hair. I think the case is that usually our hair is wicked thick and thus we shouldnt notice the loss, i'm mixed with white so i dont know i'd be curious to know that. My friends who are black never lost hair either
