You'll get through this, don't worry... they don't call it 'hell week' for nothing.

Have you tried any other types of protein supplements besides carnation instant breakfast? There are reportedly some patients that were not lactose intolerant prior to surgery that become so afterwards and that could be the source of some of your pain.
Good luck!

Am I supposed to be measuring
girlfriend dont make me come all the way to GA to whoop your behind! yes measure and walmart or where ever you can get the water bottles with numbers on them i have one from weight watchers that has the 32oz thing on it, and i got this big jug that is 30 oz so you HAVE TO KNOW how much your drinking and yes at least 64oz sista. so grab you a measuring thing. oh and i dont drink plain ol' nasty water i make the crystal light or SF koolaid and even those 20oz water bottles from the store i get and mix one of those TO GO drink mixes in it yummy then you know how much fluid your getting in.

And i see that your scale moved?? Your not weighing in daily are you?

Girl, you are not alone and yes, the first few weeks are HELL but just know that you will get through it and you will eventually be able to eat "like a normal person."

Deb ~
Scroll up to my post #98. I asked you not to hit me for getting on the scale this morning...lol. Girl I HAD TO!!! I HAD to see if the blasted scale moved for me at all, and it did!

And as far as measuring water goes...how do you keep an accurate count if you have to add ice cubes and then they melt and all that hastle? Like right now...I started on a big cup of water today but I left to go home for lunch. Now the cup has melted ice cubes and it's warm. So now I gotta go dump out the water, get new water, and get new ice. If you're wondering why I gotta dump out the water, it's because the ice cubes here at work are nasty, especially when they melt. So I have no idea how much water I'm actually drinking today. I do have a bottle that has "16" and "32" marks on it, but everything in between I have to guess at.

Deb ~
Awe, you're so sweet for thinking of me in the water bottle aisle of Walmart..lol I'm going to have to get a new one that's easier to read, maybe. And I DO love Crystal Light. We have TONS of it in the cabinet. We also have SF Kookaid packets and some other kind of packets. I just happen to like plain water a tad more than I like flavored, but I do get sick of it so having flavor to add is a necessity.

Off the subject, Danita is sick and I'm worried. She's hardly eaten a thing today but she can't eat. She had a protein shake, 12 pretzels and a pack of 100 calorie cookeis. She says her head is about to explode, her throat hurts, her whole body aches and she's now acting like she's going to dry heave. She's eaten nothing so there's nothing to throw up. I'm very worried. Is this the flu or "weight loss surgery sickness"?
Edit: She is now throwing up the juice she just drank. God I'm so worried. There's nothing in her stomach!!!
God I'm in tears!!

M, it sounds like a flu to me. but let her know to pump up on the fluids like alot that way she can flush it out of her system. And back away from all those carbs. (heehe just had to throw that in there) maybe make her some soup without stuff in it. poor thing

Whether it's the flu or not, the food intake is not helping. Protein Shakes good. Empty carbs? Bad. If she can't (or can't eat pretzels and cookies), then she should be eating liquid foods like broth, soups with no solids in them, or protein shakes. That's what a post-WLS pouch needs. I don't know why she would eat pretzels and cookies in order to consume calories her body needs

Water can go down if it's sipped slowly. If the juice won't stay down then just water and introduce NONSWEET things (no juice) after she's kept water down.

It could be a flu bug. Post WLS, flu bugs wipe us out pretty hard if we're early postop. But it will pass and the short time of not getting a lot calories in will be okay. When we DON'T have WLS and we get the flu we don't eat much then right? Have her try sugar free popsicles to get fluid in slowly. Or pedialyte from the grocery store, it's a hydrating fluid.

I'm really baffled about the pretzels and cookies though. Is that the doctor diet that she's following?

The pretzels and cookies are not a "diet" that Danita is on. She was at work (she's a machinist) and had her morning protein shake. From that point on she had the runs and felt sick. When lunch time came around and she called me and told me she had only had a shake, I told her that she NEEDED to eat something. She said that she didn't want to eat anything because she felt sick, but she went ahead and tried eating some pretzels. She was able to eat 12 little sticks. She felt sick for the rest of the day at work and got off at 3:00. We went straight to the grocery store where she continued to feel sick. When we got home, she felt like eating again so she ate one of those little 100 calorie packages of chocolate chip cookies and drank a little juice. The next thing we know, she's throwing up everything she had just eaten and drank.
She is coughing this morning and hasn't eaten anything yet, but I'm going to see to it that she at least has a protein shake. I have woken up with a VERY sore throat...great...I guess I'm next

Being sick is one of those test times that you'll look back upopn and see was one of those steps toward the changes you made to be a WLS success. I was pretty sick twice the first year after WLS and I remember they were great opportunities to make me start to take care of my body. A big part of becoming obese is the lack of self-care in a healthy form. Getting sick meant I couldn't avoid it. It's like taking a midterm exam.

Of course it sucks to be sick, I know, but with your new body, being sick requires some extra attention to things that are basic criticals for long term success. Good luck with those. I hope you and your partner get better soon and that this is an opportunity for you both to feel more and more strengthened in your behavior modification that makes long-term WLS work for you both.
