I read similar things somewhere else but this is the one that I could find quickly.
I am not trying to bash the surgery by any means just trying to be my mothers voice now that she is gone. She was very active in these forums (i can't find the exact one that she was on unfortunately but I figure i am reaching just as many people on this one).

Wikipedia is hardly a trustworthy source of information. Since it is updated by many regardless of qualification, it could (and probably does) contain inaccuracies.
Additionally, the sentence in the portion you quoted is referring to pre-operative patients, not post. I still doubt the validity of the number regardless of preoperative or postoperative status. I did A LOT of research before I had the surgery, spoke with several doctors, and investigated several doctors and their results through the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. (Which certified my doctor and his entire practice as a Center of Excellence.) This is the first time, even being here on this board with multiple experiences, that I have heard of the liver and kidney problems.
I'm sorry you are feeling the way you are feeling, but it's better for all if accurate information is passed, especially for our preoperative and newbie folks.

I am a pastor who has lost (and found) many hundreds of pounds in my almost 56 years. Jay, bless you for your passion in following up on this when many would just be ticked, but not do anything with their feelings. I have my GBS on April 16. Yesterday, I spent 3.5 hours in my pre-surgical appt. with my wife. ONe of the things we did was watch a video about potential complications, some happen soon, some are not manifested for days, months, years. But the statistics show that for the majority of GBS patients, things go well...statistics don't help the pain of a son who's lost his mother. I have had to go to support meetings monthly for 6 months, work out with a trainer and see my doc monthly along with his nutritionist and nursing staff...Because of your post, I will be especially mindful of liver function. You see, it's because of my liver that I have the bypass. Medicine (NSAIDS) I take for my deteriorated hip are liable to ruin my liver, so I have to lose weight "fast and forever" in order to get the hip surgery. But I'm blathering on about me....Just want to say how much I ache for you. You are about the age of my son--what if I die on the table or shortly after? How will he be feeling? Of course I do not expect this outcome. But I hope he'd be a strong advocate for organ donation. Formerly a hospital chaplain, I have been involved in all sides of donor activity. Anyway, I guess I want to gently remind you that Wikpedia is not necessarily the best place to get your statistics...But I don't want to be a dickhead about it. I am so sorry for all you and your dear Mom had to face. Sorry, Jay.

Ok so maybe the 90% is wrong I am not a doctor. Here is what i was told by the surgeon (liver transplant surgeon). "This isn't all that uncommon with bariatric surgeries." Just wanted to put it out there. I took a lot of time and read a lot of stuff on this forum and it just seems like a lot of these people concentrate on the positive and kind of push the really bad things to the side. I understand that a positive mental attitude does get you a long way but I just want to say that death is a very real possibility. Most of you know this but I wanted to put a story to it to make it a little more real for people.

Completely understandable. Every single one of us here knows that death is a possibility.
Thank you for sharing your story.

Jay, I am sorry you have that as part of your lifestory. But you're right. I think even on the table, the worldwide mortality rate for GBS is 1 out of 200. My doc told me his stats are 1 out of 800. I am not quoting any Journal or anything, just what my doc told me. It's definitely risky. Trouble is for us morbidly obese folks who haven't been able to lose it and keep it off forever, not having the surgery is a risk too.
Take care, Jay, and God be with you.

Good luck to all
this is too upsetting for me to continue so I am just going to leave it at that.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL. Become a organ donor and get your liver and kidneys checked out post op.

Not many people talk about the bad. But its still always good too hear about the ones that are doing great and having a much better life. And yes I am a full organ donor even my eyes! god bless you. laura

I am so sorry you had such a horrible time and have lost your weight and now have had to reverse the procedure. I am 18 months out and doing well. I have finally started to put on a few more pounds. I am down to a size 0-1. My grandkids say I am TO skinny. Well, at least I have my health back. Wish you the best.

Jay I am absolutely unimpressed with the way that you came into this forum to take out your anger. We are truly sorry about what happened to your mother but you are coming in here and "bashing" this surgery.
We are not stupid and uneducated we all know or knew the risks when we decided to undergo the procedure. Living obese is not healthy either and we have chosen to do something about it. For many of us this was our last resort.
Don't come in here and judge me!!!!!!!!!
You need a whole lot of tact because you have absolutely none. Telling people they are going to go to hell because they are not organ donors. Again you don't know us or our circumstances so don't judge.
I'm with Bridget you need to join a support group instead of coming here and bashing people.

Thanks for sharing your mother's story. We all should be awaire of the risks before taking such a drastic measure. This surgery is dangerous and has many risks. We all had to make that decision prior to surgery and decide which was best for us. For me... The surgery has been a blessing so far, my quality of life has risen to a new level. This is not to say the rny is for everyone, our bodies are a strange and wanderous thing. Some people take offense when they hear the negative. I think it's great! because we should all be educated. I never heard of the liver problems though... What in the world? Why would rny distroy a perfectly good liver? Seems like there would have to be a problem to begin with, but who am I to say.
