I'm Home!
I came home this afternoon. I'm still in quite a bit of pain, but I've already lost 9 pounds! I can't believe I'm home after just having the surgery Monday. I'll post much more later, when I can type more comfortably. I'm off to sip...
Thanks for all of your continued support!
-Mike

Congratulations on your new beginning Mike. I will be having gbs this Monday and am so excited. I hope I lose as much as you do just coming home from the hospital. I'll keep you in my prayers during your recovery.

Update!
Well, day by day, things are getting slowly better. (I know it's only been two days.) I'm still very sore, and my back is killing me, I guess from being in one position for several days. I had some more blood work done this morning and I have my post op appointment next Thursday. I did lose 9 pounds in the hospital, and I'll find out next Thursday if I've lost any additional weight. I'm on a clear liquid diet right now and through Monday. I haven't been hungry at all, but I've wanted to taste every food that I've seen on TV since the surgery. I know the commercials were there before, but I never realized the quantity of commercials that are food related. (And toy related, for that matter.) I've been having coffee, chicken broth, water, Crystal Light, Sugar Free Jello, apple juice, and Sugar Free popsicles, and I've been doing pretty well with it. I "graduate" to "FULL" liquids next week, so I'll be able to have creamy soups, milk, and the protein shakes I was drinking before the surgery. That will last a couple of weeks and then I can have some soft foods, pureed stuff, mashed potatotes, etc.
Since the surgery, I've gone down to one diabetes pill a day rather than two, and no pill for blood pressure. (Though this is what my doctor told me to do, not necessarily related yet to better health, just post surgical trial...) My blood sugar has been dead on perfect since Monday every time I test it. I'm looking forward to seeing my bloodwork results next week and see what my overall prognosis will be as far as continuing ANY diabetes medicine. If nothing else, getting rid of the diabetes and blood pressure medications will have made the surgery well worth it.
Oh, and if you're up to it, here's a picture of the incision, just CLICK HERE. The spot on the left is where they placed an anesthetic pump, the middle is the surgical incision, and on the right is where the doctor placed the drain, which was removed at the hospital. Yes, I've taken a bath, that's just what it looks like. The rest of the picture is just my normal attractiveness, try not to be overwhelmed by the Greek-like beauty.
Modestly yours,
Mike

My back KILLED me once I got home.. Get a heating pad and lay on it! I am telling you it will be your best friend!! I then would put it on my stomach, it seemed to help with the gas pains. Good luck!!! Sounds like you are doing reat!!! Take Care, Renee

October 13th Update
Good Morning Folks!
Just thought I'd update again. Things are going well. I'm having a little trouble sleeping, as rolling over seems to catch something around the incision site so I usually end up on my back.
My back's not hurting anymore, but if I sit too long, my butt just kills me! I've lost another ten pounds, but I think the slowdown is coming. I'm getting close to 700 calories a day--all protein related, with between 60-70 grams of protein daily. I don't know how in the world I'll get in more--some of you are talking about getting 80-100 grams a day.
I've been able to get in my fluids as well, at least 64 oz, sometimes more. My doctor said I could eat whatever at this point as long as chew everything really well and steer away from high fat and high sugar foods. With the protein I'm eating, though, there are next to no carbs.
The things I'm enjoying eating right now are: Baked Haddock filets from Schwan's (4 oz- 21 grams of protein), Zone Protein Bars (1.5 - 2.0 oz --14 - 15 grams of protein), Boiled chicken with tomato sauce, parmesan, and lowfat mozzarella (7 oz. total, takes 2 to 3 sittings to get it all down, 28 grams of protein), South Beach Diet Wraps (chewed carefully, eaten in at least 2 sittings, 24 grams of protein). Again, I reiterate, I chew things up pretty good...I don't want anything to get stuck. (My doctor said my mouth was as good a blender as anything--just chew, chew, chew before you swallow!)
I drink Crystal Light/Water all day, milk in the protein shake that I choke down because I hate it, and an occasional cup of coffee.
The best thing so far is the way my pants are fitting. They are baggy--and my belt is being fastened at the 5th hole instead of the 1st or 2nd one. Oh, and I'm going to have to get my wedding ring resized, it's getting loose! (I've been sleeping with it on my middle finger so it doesn't fall off in the night.)
Thanks again for all of your support--I couldn't have done this as well without you all!
-Mike
