July 23rd --- 5 years!
It's hard to believe that in the morning it will be 5 years since I had open RNY. I thought I'd bring home my journal and share parts of my journey with you. I will try not to make it too long.
July 17, 2002 Blood drawn for check of kidney function and redo of EKG.
I also had a fatty liver and the redo of the EKG was because I have abnormal EKG's. I was on blood pressure med's, cholesterol med's, arthritis med's, and something else. I can't remember.
July 23, 2007 arrived at the hospital at 6:20 a.m., preped and then surgery. I woke up about noon. I had oxygen, those inflatable leggins, IV, PCA pump, drain down nose for stomach, a binder and of course staples. Wrote in my journal the first day I slept a lot. Weighed 268 lbs.
Day 2 IV needed to be redone. The nurse tried 5 times before she finally got it in. She wanted to go home and just wanted them to put one in my neck.
Day 3 urine cath came out. Asked the nurse if I could get weighed. Gained 17 lbs. Got very teary eyed as I though for sure I would have started to lose weight, she said it was just fluids from the IV and not to be concerned.
Day 4 My doctor took the PCA pump out of the incision. He said it was empty anyway. Started blocking the tube down my throat and eventually pulled it out at 5:30 p.m. I remember how good it felt to get it out as my throat was getting very sore and I could hardly swallow.
My supper consisted of:
1 fluid oz of cranberry juice (drank 1/2)
1 fluid oz of chicken broth (drank 3/4)
1 fluid oz of lemmon jello (took one bite)
Day 5 Still very puffy but I started to loose some of the excess water. Finally got to go home.
August 23, 2002 one month after surgery I ate
1/2 C. Rice crispies
2 oz milk
1 oz sliced turkey breast
2 oz green grapes
2 oz yogurt
1 oz ham
Total calorie intake 235.5 (Wish I had found this site back then - I had no clue what or how much I should be eatting)
September 4th down to 224 lbs.
Sept 29 208 lbs. Down 60 lbs in 2 months + 1 week
Took my first measurements (wish I had done that prior to surgery I would really like to know exactally how many inches are gone)
Neck 14.75"
Chest 46.25"
Waist 37.5"
Hips 53.5"
Dec 6, 2002 192 lbs
Dec 28 185 lbs
Jan 19, 2003 176 ( 92 lbs in 6 months)
Feb 5 172 lbs
March 4, 2003 169 (Weight loss slowing down)
April 4, 2003 163 lbs
May 17, 2003 153 lbs (115 lbs in almost 10 months)
July 23, 2003 1 year anniversary 151
Neck 13
Chest 38
Waist 30.5
Hips 40.5
Somewhere around June - July 2003 I had an abdominal penniculectomy (sp?) Removed about 3 lbs of skin. Not too much weight - darn!
Sept 2003 Incisional hernia repair
Recheck of hernia repair Oct. 2003 - no lifting recheck in 1 month - 6 weeks.
November 2003 134 lbs (lost 1/2 of myself)
July 27, 2004 just after 2 year anniversary 148 lbs (Opps! gained a little there)
July 23, 2005 3 years 139 lbs
July 23, 2006 4 year 128 lbs
April 25, 2007 revision surgery 128 lbs. lost down to 119 back at 121 - 123
July 23, 2007 5 years!
122 lbs
Neck 11.25"
Chest 36"
Waist 26.75"
Hips 37.75"
I too unfortunately went through a divorce during the corse of this weight loss. I don't know if we just get tried of putting up with stuff that we shouldn't have to or if it was going to happen anyway.
So that's my stats and my not so breif story. I am truly grateful to have found this site and all the wonderful people out here. I just wish I had found it 5 1/2 years ago. Love you guys!! You're the best!!!
Sharon

Awesome success.
How come you had to do a revision? Was there a complication with the original RNY? I understand if you don't want to share the information.
You have done an amazing job.

Sharon, Thank you so much for being an active part of our group and for sharing your story. It helps us each in some way to see the stories of those who have gone before us!

I had the revision...
done due to some health issues. At about 3.5 years out I was starting to get sick everytime I ate. Didn't matter what it was, I also was having terrible bouts with diarrhea & gas. I went to the doctor and found that a section of my bowl was dialated and a portion of the limb was to long and refluxing back into my stomach.

Thanks everyone!
I just have read so much on here about people getting very frightened if they stop or gain a little weight. While posting this I ran across where I'd gone from 134 to 148 lbs. I think it's all very "normal" to bounce around a little. I realized that I'd gained some weight and that I needed to start paying a little more attention to what I was eatting. That was also during the time of my divorce. It took a year to the day for it to finally be over. I am an emotional eatter.
This journey we're all on is a struggle for the rest of our lives. Our bodies are NOT the same any more. I still struggle with food, I love chocolate but it sure dosen't like me (in more ways than one). As of lately I'm having a real struggle with anything "fried". I like fish, but I dont dare eat any right now. Can't eat KFC makes me sick as a dog. I've always had digestive problems since I was about 15. It runs in my family. It's just my body telling me to back off the spices (cajun and the like), and the grease (fats) and let my system rest for a while, I've noticed it cycle like that several times in my adult life. I'm sure some of it now days is from the RNY too.
Anyway, I'm doing much better since the revision. I still am having some minor pains at the incision, but I think it's the nerves around the knots being irritated by the movement of my skin and muscle across them. I do a lot of twisting at work.
I wish I had advise or more insite as to this process, but unfortunately I didn't find this site until a few months ago. I have truly learned a lot from reading the posts on here. I do not believe anyone could/should fail at this given the proper knowledge of how to work their tool, and there is just so much support here too.
Thanks again!
Sharon
