I suspect they weed through the interviews and send on the ones they are most interested in on to the surgeon's office. I promise to let you know as soon as I know anything! I just am really so excited about this possibility. Too bad you don't live around here. My Dr has several Medical Social Workers that work there. You know, you might be able to do something with that Psych. degree yet. *G*
Oh, I hope you get it and I do wish I had more opportunities....Ohio isn't the best place for jobs......but hey, our houses are cheaper. I plan to look into other jobs after I recoop a few weeks, then if I am not satisfied I'm going to go work on an RN. At least with that you are always employable......and like you, I SOOOO wanna work bariatrics. if you get the job you'll have to explain what it's like and what you do, so I will know if that is what I want to do. Too bad you don't already have it......you could have "take your out of state friend to work day".

It does......and I've been thinking of going back to school for a long time, but just was never sure exactly what I wanted to do. It will take a lot of time, money, and energy, so I want to be sure about my decision. My Psych degree can be somewhat limiting without an LSW or an MA. I have been working with people with disabilities since even before college, and have done well. However, I really am disappointed by the direction that field has taken in recent years, and particularly the agency I have been with almost 17 years. At this point in my life I don't have to make tons of money, because I take care of a disabled man in my home which is income. But I need to like my job, and I need insurance. Pretty basic requests I would think. But my heart would really be in bariatrics. I would especially love a job that had a lot of training or teaching involved. I also have an interest in helping people prepare for and survive raising adopted children from the foster care system.....but I don't think that field is yet ready for my honesty and straightforwardness. See, now I'm rambling......yep.....I am definitely trying to distract myself from this upcoming surgery.

Ramble away, my dear! We'll distract each other. *L*

Well I highly recommend going into nursing. Like you said, you are always going to be able to find a job. My oldest is in a nursing program right now. She opted to go the ADN route which I backed whole heartidly. She will have a degree in Rec. Therapy too. I just feel the ADN program was the smartest route for her. She is 24 and that program is only a 2 year program. Then when she gets that RN job the hospital she works at will help pay to further her education. Then she can go on and get her BSN. Plus it gives her experience that is so needed. I'm a diploma nurse, which means I don't have a degree. They are great programs too because you go in with a lot of practical skills but there are only a few left around the country.

I'm sure we must be boring the heckie out of everyone...but daggone it....we need obsessive distractions......it's another key to success.......finding more suitable addictions and distractions besides food. Ok, the ADN is the regular RN, correct? Then you have to take some add'l classes at a 4 yr college to get the BSN? I have a 4 year degree, so was hoping if I did an ADN that I could easily add a few stray classes to have the BSN. Now what is the diploma...that one I don't know. My sister was an LPN for many years and just became an RN this summer. I'm very proud of her for going back after so long. She got in at a hospital and is very happy with her job. I just dread all the time and hard work I know I'll need to put in......but I know it's worth it. And there are so many different areas in nursing, that it's almost like having several degrees in a way. The other thing I hate though, is that the programs around here have long waiting lists right now.

Sorry I disappeared on you. I had to run and pick up a daughter from work. *L*

The ADN program is the Associates Degree. It is normally a 2 year program. You will have pre reqs before you can actually start the program and I can tell you that the waiting list at the local ADN program here is 5 years right now. So, if you are even thinking about going into nursing I would find a program and get your name on the waiting list. Then while you wait you start on the pre-reqs. I'm sure several of your past classes would qualify, especially psych classes. But you do need a fair amount of science classes. The BSN is your 4 year program. After you get you ADN you can continue on towards you BSN. A BSN certainly is not required to work within a hospital or doctor's office but if you are looking at being a teacher, public health nurse, administrator and other things they will require at least some sort of degree. Sometimes they are willing to accept that you just have some kind of college degree to get the job. I'm not sure how many more years of education you would need to get your BSN after you have your ADN but I do know there are accelerated programs out there. I believe there is one in our area that would get you your BSN in a year. There are alot of possibilities out there but the waiting lists are long.

Now the Diploma program is a 3 year program. It is a hospital based program not a college based one. You take classes but most of it is practical training in the hospital. You don't have a degree of any sort but you are an RN. For me that was what I wanted. I was not interested in administration and I'm still not so I've never gone on to get a degree. For me it would take a lot of additional education since technically I only took one semester of college courses. The rest of my classes were through the school of nursing that I was in which wasn't affiliated with a college, only a hospital. It's a good program if you only want to do basic nursing but I as I said there aren't many of them around anymore.

Ok, now I get it.....but I haven' heard of the diploma program, so I don't think they have them around here. The problem with the ADN program is that even to get on the list you have to have certain pre-reqs done. Soooo, that makes it even longer of a wait. But still, even though it will take some time, I think I'll just take my time and do it. But first, I'm going to see if there are bariatric jobs using my current degree. Thanks for all the info Beth....and I disappeared awhile too.....been packing stuff for my sister's and trying to organize things here.

You're welcome, Marty. Anytime you have any questions just let me know. Definintly look at the Bariatric programs in your area. There may just be something you can get into with your present degree. Like I said, there are several MSW in my surgeon's office. Find an office that is multi-disciplinary. That would be your best bet. You know or maybe you can be trained as a support group leader!

At our bariatric place the nutritionists and patient reps do the meetings. I guess I need to find out which jobs are paid employees. Not that I would mind volunteering, but I need insurance daggone it! In the meantime, I am hoping within a few months my friend's boss starts offerring insurance and I can work for him. It's work I would find ok, just not something my heart is into......but he's great to work for and flexible enough that I could still take classes. Well, ok, I need to finish my video so I can go to bed.......talk to you soon.
