went to the dietitian today
found out i am not eating enough, was told that i should be eating 1/2 cup of food at a time three-six times per day --what!!!??
i am eating two tablespoons - 1/4 cup two-three times a day, depending on how i handle it, but am managing 40-50 grams of protein usually, but calories can be 400-600 - but the protein intake is good for that low of calories, at least thats what i think
i was told i should be having 600-800 calories at this point, most days i am at that, i was told 60 grams of protein, and was told 30 mins before and after meals for liquidls, to eat very slowly and take at least 30 minutes to eat or drink a portion of 1/2 cup, told that if i begin to feel full or have pain, stop eating right away...wait for the pain to go away before starting to eat again, but to make sure i do finish that 1/2 cup portion -this i was not doing, once i felt full i would stop and then i would drink after 30 minutes and up until 30 minutes before my next meal, i was told to drink 1 1/2 - 2 litres or water of low-energy fluids such as skim milk, weak tea, broth, or decafe coffee.
Was told for constipation to take 60ml of Fruitlax or pureed prunes or purne juice - here is the recipe for the Fruitlax: 2 /14 cup seedless raisins, 1 cup pitted prunes, 2 1/4 cup pitted dates, 1 cup orange juice (unsweetened), 1 cup prune juice 1. Heat prune and orange juice to boiling 2. soak prunes, raisins and chopped dates over night (12) hours in the orange and prune juice. 3. Drain and reserve juice from soaked fruit. 4. Put drained fruit through grinder or blender (to consistency of thick jam) 5. Mix thoroughly with reserved prune or orange juice 7. Store in refrigerator, or freeze for future use. 8. Yields approximately 1 1/2 litres (6cups) Recommended Dose: 15-60ml (1-4 Tbsp) daily as required.
I am also going to post a few other recipes that i was given on the nutrition/recipe threads, they are recipes for high protein food choices
I know i am rambling, but i am going to post one more thing, a typical menu for a days meals and time that was given to me out of the Eating Well after Bariatric Surgery Guide from the Edmonton Dieticians for people 8 weeks and more post op
Morning 730-800Am 1/2 cup unsweetened juice
Breakfast 830-900AM 1 piece whole grain toast - 1tsp margarine
1 boiled egg
930-1000AM 1 cup milk
Snack 1030-1100AM 1 cup fruit or 1 medium piece
1130AM-Noon 1 cup water
Lunch 1230-100pm 1/2 tuna sandwich (1piece whole grain toast, 1/2 cup tuna, 2 tsp low fat mayonnaise or mustard or cottage cheese
2 tomato slices
1/4 cup raw vegetables
130-200pm 1 cup water
Snack 300-330pm 4 melba toast or 6 whole wheat crackers
1 oz cheddar cheese
1/2 cup carrot sticks
400-430pm 1 cup water
430-500pm 1 cup milk
Supper 630-700pm 1/2 cup pasta
1/4 cup tomato sauce with mixed vegetables
2oz chicken breast or 1/2 cup cottage cheese
730-800pm 1 cup water
830-900pm 3 graham crackers
1 tbsp peanut butter
3/4 cup yogurt
930-1000pm 1 cup water
wow that is so much food for one day, i cant even phathom that right now, i dont agree with eating after 7pm, so i will omit the last snack once i can eat that much or move it to the morning as i get up much earlier than this plan starts, but this is a good guide for someone that can eat this way or at least a goal to work towards, this is only an example to give ideas for meals and snacks and portion size and meal pattern, you will need to change this meal pattern and food choices to make it work for you, but i thought it was a nice suggestion and a good visual so i thought i would share it. This sample day provides 65 grams of protein, 5 servings of grain products, 5 1/2 servings fo vegetables and fruit, 3 1/2 servings of milk products, 3 servings of meat and alternatives and 7 1/2 cups of fluid.......i hope to be able to follow this as much as possible one day soon.

Carrie, as you can see, everyone has their own opinion on foods. Quantity is relative and even at 9 months out, I could not eat what you listed. 1/2 cup of pasta with chicken...no way. Now saying this, I can eat a cup of food at this point, even more depending on what it is.
I agree with the fluids...so important. The idea of eating in 30 minutes and stopping if you have pain and then starting again...WHAT??? Listen to your body, if it says its in pain..STOP!
I think after your scope next week, you will feel a difference in what and quantity you can eat. You know Nohr's feelings on milk - so you choose. I do drink some milk, but not the amount listed. Also 6 meals a day is common for some patients...Nohr likes 3 meals a day and that is what I have stuck too...mostly as I was a grazing eater before and became obese....I find it much easier to stick to 3 meals a day and all others are liquid (one may be protein drink!)
Glad you went to see the dietician...just remember to listen to your own body!

thanks lisa
i took the info and will do what is best for me
six meals a day - i know - i freaked out when she said that and the quantity - i cant even imagine eating that much
i dump on milk now and on sugar - so i stick to propel and water and herbal teas on occasion
i will stick to three times a day and add protein drinks when needed to boost my protein intake if i havent got it in with the foods that day
when she said if you feel pain when eating stop - but when you are able to eat again, finish the food out of that 1/2 cup portion you didnt finish before the pain or fullness hit - i am not eating 1/2 cup yet, and i wasnt following that part of starting to eat to finish what i didnt - i just gave what i couldnt eat once i was full to my dog

My surgeon told me to try and work up to 1/2 cup three times a day, but if I couldn't get it all in, don't worry. Just do the best I can and be sure and take my supplements. He said everyone is different and some people can eat that amount and some can't. So, told me to listen to my body. I am 4 1/2 months out and I still don't eat 1/2 cup of food three times a day. I'm lucky to get in 1/4 cup.

Wow,
That sure is a lot of food. I don't think I was able to do that early out. I was told by our Nutritionist to not eat margarine. We are told to eat Butter. Also, I can't drink unsweetened juice...it gets me every time. So, basically, I think they gave you a good guideline..but as we all see every doctor guideline is different and varies slightly. Good thing to do is increase your calories as they suggested to you and do it by eating what works best for you.
At 2 year plus, I can eat 3/4 to 1 cup of food depending on whether or not it is protein mixed with veggies or mostly veggies mixed with protein. I sure can't eat a whole cup of meat...I would just die.

definitely each profession gives different advice, i was told no butter only soft margarine labeled as non-hydrogenated, also no cream cheese, and i have seen many posts saying they eat cream cheese, the book she gave me also said no gravy and i have been using gravy to moisten blended foods, and when i told her that, she said it was fine, contradicting the info she gave me, so i am just taking the info she gave me and doing what works for me, it is a good guide portion/time wise if someone can follow it, and there are people out there far enough out that are off track on over eating that may want to follow it, thats why i shared it, its not for everyone, and i will adjust it to fit me, i am not even at 1/4 cup yet, so i cant even imagine being able to eat this much, and i dont do snacks, too dangerous i think....how would i be able to stop that later when the weight loss stalls if i start snacking now? there is lots of suggestions in the info i got that contradict pouch rules for dummies, the guide i was given follows the canadian food guide, that is what is taught here to dieticians and i think no matter what person goes to see them for whatever reason, they think everyone should follow that balanced eating guide, i dont agree, i will still go by getting in protein first, then if i have my 60 grams+ then i will eat veggies and other stuff, but i am still not at the 60 grams most days, so that is my first priority, maybe this info she gave me will come in handy once i am further out.

Carrie, I agree...listen to your own body and make the choices. Its nice to see everyone's opinion and take what you can from each. You will find in time that its about balance and learning what best things to put into your own body. I know for me, some eating days are better than others....when I am stressed, I have a hard time getting in all my food - thank goodness for protein drinks!
34 pounds girl....congrats!

You're doing great!
Carrie,
I don't have any words of advice since I am barely beginning this process but I wanted to let you know that I am learning so much reading your story. Keep up the good work girl!
