Nobody's here yet, so I guess I'm te first! I am in Asheville, NC. I didn't have my surgery here, but the support group that I go to is through Mission Bariatrics. It meets on the first Thursday of the month in the meeting trailer in the Latta parking lot. I think this is just temporary until they finally finish all the construction work they're doing at the hospital.

Personally, I don't care for this support group. I go because I need to face-to-face support, but I get a whole lot more on here than I get there. If there are any locals on here, it would be great to find some people to get together with!

Okay, thought I would update my previous post. The Mission Bariatrics support group is now going to be meeting the first Tuesday of the month somewhere over off of Hendersonville Rd. behind Asheville Cardiology. I think it's called the Reuters Children's Center, but I could be mistaken. Anyway, thought I would post that just in case anyone on here was interested!

Also, I live in Asheville and go to the local support group when I can, but they would not do my surgery here. They wouldn't do surgery on anyone over 400 lbs. In my opinion, they are falsely trying to keep their stats down so they can become a Center of Excellence. To me, that's cheating. Sure, if you only do surgery on a few chosen cases you aren't going to have complications, but how does that help you improve as a weight loss surgeon? Anyway, completely my opinion! I had surgery in Concord, NC at Carolina Weight Loss Surgery. Dr. Roc Bauman is an excellent surgeon with many years of experience doing weight loss surgery and that is all he does. He is a Blue Cross Blue Shield Center of Excellence and also a Bariatric Center of Excellence. Anyway, just thought I was update this thread because I have gotten a few PM's with questions from people about why I didn't have surgery locally. That's it!

Hi Tonya....how are you? Surgery went well, I am at home driving my husband crazy and trying to get in protein and liquids. Whew that is hard. I think I am up to 50 grams of protein a day, but that is streching it. I go to get my jp drain out Tuesday, and back to work a week from Monday. I can't wait for mushies! I hate cottage cheese and am just waiting for the ok to try it.

I have a question...you may not be able to answer it, but I went to earth fare today (gotta get in some walking) and they have protein smoothies. I am on full liquids, but I am not sure if I can have these. It has 14 grams of protein, but it has fruit. I am scared to death of dumping, but I have been drinking watered down juice since the hospital to keep my blood sugar stable. SO what are your thoughts?

Glad to see ya post, Cari! You do have to be very careful with fruit, especially this early out. I have still not tried the smoothies at Earthfare. A lot of places like that don't just use fresh fruit, the fruit is in some sort of juice that is usually loaded with sugar. That or they are made with a yogurt base and the yogurt is not sugar free. The best thing to do would be to ask, but I would still be careful with fruit this early. I think i was a few months out before trying any fruit other than watered down juice.

It sounds like you are doing great on the protein! It was months before I got anywhere near 60 grams of protein in a day. My nutritionist said that was perfectly normal. She just really started fussing at me when I didn't get all my protein in after 3 months, and I still wasn't at that point.

Just take it easy and rest. Enjoy the ride!

Thanks Tonya...my dh got one, and I sipped it one time, it did not sit right, I left it alone. Right now I am just concentrating on getting in at least 40-50 oz of liquid. And...trying to get the bowels to move! lol.

When I left my surgeon at the hospital, his last words were get in your proteins...oh how little did I know how hard that would be. The booklet they gave me said try to get in 60 grams of protein and at least 36 oz of liquids. I laughed out loud last night when I read that. I am doing getting between 42-50 grams of protein, and wow water becomes harder a bit more every day. Today my goal was to do a whole bottle, a cup of tea, and then some more water (and then some watered down juice to keep my sugar right). Whew...this is going to be a long ride.

Hey Missi

I have the Gastric Bypass, but I was going to do the lapbad and did all the reasearch and then changed my mind halfway through. Are you going to go through Mission Hospital's program? I went through them and know a bit about them. What are your questions?
