We too have pets in the back yard. Those ones are pretty to look at, and we get sad when we see the twin piebald fawns mommy splattered on the road (true story...but her udders are not engorged so i'm thinking the fawns are eating well on solids despite still wearing their spots). I have a couple typical North Hills Pittsburgh backyard bucks that visit from time to time, but i'd never shoot one of them. they are too pretty to look at in the late fall.
Out on the farms though..that's a different story. Those guys need help keeping their corn prices down. I plant the garden to feed the deer

Today was somewhat of a wow moment for me hunting wise. I went over to a piece of property I have permission to hunt that is so,so. There's deer there but it doesn't hold them. They funnel through to feeding areas and bedding areas but none the less they pass through regularly.
The first wow moment was when I FINALLY cut through the briars and undergrowth to get to a lock-on that was hung a couple years ago. After breaking a maddox, lopers, and loosing about a pint of blood we made it. Its about 25 ft up and I remember last year I wouldn't even think of climbing it. It's an API lock-on with latter sticks to climb. Well, today I never thought twice about NOT climbing it. I scurried right up those climbing sticks and wiggled my big ol' butt right on that thing. What an awsome feeling!!!!!! The freedom of not being a slave to my obesity is amazing! I felt like the king of the world. However, I realized I wasn't superman and can't fly so, I definetly need a HSS safety vest before I go back.
Here's the second wow moment! It's the same piece of property that I blew off last year as not being a good spot because it would take too much work. However, this year my entire prospective has changed. I look at it so much different because I'm willing to put forth the EFFORT needed to make it work. You know I'm quickly learning that with EFFORT you can make just about anything work. I looked down from that stand and saw where I wanted to put my shooting lanes, feeders, C'mere deer, etc....Last year I just looked at the work it took to get there and how tired I was and blew it off.
We also cut down some dead limbs over the 2 man stand and put out about 40 lbs of corn. Our bow season starts next monday Sept. 7th. I might try to go and sit a few mornings and evenings this week with my camera to see if anything is moving through those areas. Good morning to be out in God's creation!

I slipped off to Bass Pro today and picked up a new pair of pants, my hunting liscense, and a safety harness for my treestand.
So, I got home and tried on the pants, they fit fine and tried for figure out the safety harness. Once I figured it out I decided to test it.
So, went outside and stood in a chair and hooked the harness around a tree. Then stepped off the chair and went dangling on the side of a tree. It was quite the experience but I'm glad I figured it out 4 ft off the ground instead of 24 ft.

just remember to adjust the jewels correctly in that harness Bama. I teste'd mine last week and it's NOT comfortable. I scored a good harness at a local store on clearance for 10 bucks.
i'm sofa king ready for season to start. Might be going on a red tag crop damage hunt this weekend to stretch the 308's legs.
Btw, thanks again man. wife just shrugs and looks at me funny when I'm practicing the climbing stand thing

A word of warning
A word of warning to all you hunters....I was in the woods monday to clear out some shooting lanes and put out corn. At some point I was bitten by a spider and it has left a nasty mark. Starting to become painful as well.
Doctor said i caught it early enough that he thinks we can treat it with mouth antibiotics for 7 days and then come back to re-evaluate. I don't know when I got bit or what kind but just be careful out there.

I was thinking about you guys as I was cutting soap I made using deer tallow I rendered and froze last season.
I'm the only person in my area I know of who was given written permission to use the fat from legally hunted deer and elk in handmade soap production.

the second doe i shot last year had alot of fat on her. the guy that helped us butcher the deer kept the tallow and fat to make soap and candles. I guess he makes alot. it's a dying art form. congrats to you for still doing it!

There hasn't been much fat on deer in this area - they just seem small. There's CWD in Washington State but nothing reported in this area.
Rendering fat from deer and elk is pretty stinky stuff. I do mine outside on the deck.

Went out for the first time this year tonight. Didn't see anything, but glad to offically kick-off the 2009 season. Man, it's so awsome to be able to walk to your stand and not sweat to death. I also, like being able to climb into a stand now. It opens up so many more options. Here's a pic
