Gout
Is anyone else battling gout. I had flare up (third one in my life) the day after surgery and accoring to the rhumetologist I have a very advanced and serious case. I have to take steroids when it flares which ups my blood sugars and that means more insulin. arrrrrrgggg The weird part is, I have in both elbows and one wrist.

Gout
I haven't had surgery yet but I think I had a bout with this about 2 weeks ago. The joint in one of my big toes hurt soooo bad. Someone told me to
get 100% cherry juice to drink. I did that and in a couple of days the pain started going away.

I just read an aritcle recently that said when you have a flare up to eat cherries by the handful... Something about the acid breakdown. I don't know if it would work since you seem to have it in extreme (not just one joint) but I would try it...can't hurt right?

I have it in both feet and two fingers on my left hand (I originally thought I had rheumatoid arthritis because the knuckles were becoming deformed, but learned it was from the uric acid build-up from gout), and it really flared up early post-op when I was losing weight rapidly, which caused more purines to be released into the blood by the kidneys, triggering uric acid increases in the joints. Excruciating!
I take Allopurinol daily as well as anti-inflammatories (which are still allowed with the VSG surgery, unlike RNY), and have an emergency Methylprednisolone dose pack on hand also. I've also heard that 100% cherry juice and fresh cherries (both of which I love) are good for alleviating gout symptoms, but haven't tried them for treating gout. Gout sucks, but the symptoms can be eliminated almost completely with treatment and/or medication - I'm so sorry you're dealing with it!
Best wishes on getting relief SOON!

I haven't had a confirmed case of gout for years.I take allopurinol daily (100mg) and that seems to keep it at bay. I stopped taking the meds for a while after surgery and experienced some gout-like symptoms so I took some COX-2 inhibitors for a few days and restarted the allopurinol and all has been well ever since.

Thanks
Thanks for the support. I am already on cholchizine and allopurinol and have a prednizone script on hand for flare ups. The prednizone does raise blood sugar and increases appatite(sp) (this sucks) but right now I am dealing with it.

Good for you, Ag Man, hope you get some relief soon. I've had it off and on over the past 25 years, and know how much fun it is. I've had only one flare up over the past four months since surgery, but it managed to work itself out after a day. I've heard that cherry juice can help, as Eric mentioned, but I've not put it into practice.

I have not had gout in 4 years now save for a quick flareup a couple days ago. I have been drinking alot of tea, and have been eating a good bit of venison. I didn't know about the cherry thing, but lucky for me cherries are in season now and the wife had brought some home. I spent a full day eating nothing but cherries and cantaloupe (i know, i know...shhh...) and the gout is GONE. I do take colchizine every day still and hope to be off that someday too.
Good luck with the gout...it sucks
Does anyone else think of the song "Lunch Lady Land" from Adam Sandler when they hear "gout?"

I had a few bouts post-op due to increased uric acid levels. Rapid weight loss and dehydration were my biggest contributors to this. I took allopurinol for a while and cholchizine as needed for flare-ups. In my case gout was the least of my worries as the increased uric acid levels also made me produce kidney stones (like nobody's business).
Hydration is the key. You might also want to watch your protein intake. My urologist told me not to do protein shakes at all. I also take Potassium Citrate (with my vitamins) to increase my pH, which I understand is also prescribed for gout. It's been over a year since I've had an issue with gout or stones.
