Hey, I like the new Avatar!

To do the backgrounds, look under the User CP, click on Customize Profile--where you went to change your colors and fonts. I posted one picture under "MAIN" and one under "PRIMARY CONTENT AREAS." I had to upload the pictures to a public album first...I just used Google images to find something I liked and uploaded them, then used the link when the picture was open in the album and pasted it into the box under Customize Profile.
