Yes, it is a compliment.

Possible interpretations:

1. CUTE AS A BUTTON - "cute, charming, attractive, almost always with the connotation of being small, 1868 (from the original 1731 English meaning of 'acute' or clever). Cute as a bug's ear, 1930; cute as a bug in a rug, 1942; cute as a button, 1946. Cute and keen were two of the most overused slang words of the late 1920s and 1930s." From "Listening to America" by Stuart Berg Flexner (Simon and Schuster, New York, 1992.)

Phrase Finder Discussion Forum...

2. The origin of the phrase “cute as a button”…it actually has nothing to do with a button as in a button on a shirt. the button quail is a very small gray super, super fluffy squishy looking (or ‘cute’ if you will) bird. people used to say “cute as a button”, meaning “cute as a button quail” b/c the bird was considered so adorable.

After reading Jim's post I was thinking about the origin of "nutty as a fruit-cake..." but maybe it is just getting close to dinner time?

Jen,
Your eyes are so alert and "alive" - really proactive. Disappointing about the interview job, but give the company a call in 2 weeks and see if there is any development re assistant job. Just getting a "foot inside the door" is really helpful - one day, when you "know the ropes" you can "climb the ladder" and actually "be" the person for the job you originally sought - a matter of perseverance and time!
Best wishes - and doll up more often - it really does you favours (you'll change your avatar to today's photo now, won't you)?!
Cheers,
Vim

Alas, now I can see what was hiding behind all that hair!
Your happy glow almost outshines your beauty.

I know how you were feeling getting all dolled up.
You feel good when you look good.
That was me last week and I was floating on a cloud all day.

And it's only gonna get better!!!!!
Hang in there!
