Gaining WLS weight back is no joke. I think that we have to REALY change our mind sets about food and exercise that have plagued most of us our whole life. Since my surgery, I am working very hard to change my mental outlook on food and exercise. I am thinking about what I CAN eat and not what I can’t eat. I am only 4 weeks post-op, but I am really trying to exercise every day (which I skip more than I should). I see people around me that have had the surgery and they don’t exercise or eat well. I am determined never to repeat my old habits. “What is the true numbers of people who regain their weight?” As long as people don’t change their ways, that number will continue to grow……

I agree, this too is what I see. The people that I know are not necessarily all gaining weight back as much as they seem to stall out between a size 16 and 20. They all feel and look worlds better and I would definitely say they greatly benefited from the surgery. But they did not utilize it to the fullest. I want to get to goal and maintain. I am scheduled for a counseling session tomorrow for part of the battle, and met with the trainer today to learn the machines at the Fitness Center. Daggone it....I'm gonna fight these beasts that plague me.

The stats scare the crap out of me. Diets have failed and my WLS for dummies book states 10-15% weight regain with RNY...what I hear here is WAY more than that.

I can only hope that my habits are changing and that I need to be strong and keep on track through the years. I think the challenging part is just beginning..... I try to keep on the postive side and use the tool to the best that I can...so far so good........but its only been 5 months~!

I think that's the "simple" key-- the people who are doing well are the people who are doing EXACTLY what they're supposed to be doing, with the Pouch Rules and stuff.

Unfortunately, though, obesity is just like any other addiction-- that is, it's a hell of a cycle to break. People that are compulsive grazers for instance, if they don't deal with that issue before/immediately after surgery, are going to continue to graze post-op, and from everything I've heard, if you graze all day on small quantities of bad stuff, you absolutely CAN put all the weight back on.

Personally, I'm not a grazer, but the numbers scare the hell out of me as well. I mean, come on-- I weigh what I do now, so even though I don't snack all day, I have clearly developed some REALLY bad eating habits in my life. Am I going to be able to manage those habits post-op? I THINK so, but no one really knows for sure until the time comes for themselves.

I just am so thankful for everyone who posts here, and ESPECIALLY the post-oppers who are struggling... as selfish as it sounds, I'm glad to have a chance beforehand to learn from others' mistakes.
