Default Colonoscopy after WLS (not for the squeamish)

Hi Everyone,

I'm still a pre-op, a mere newbie, so I sure hope it's okay to rub shoulders with you venerable post-ops on this section of the board!

Have any of you post-ops had a colonoscopy after your WLS? I'm scheduled to have one about six months after my RNY and I'm worried. Not about the 'scope - I've had them before and if the doc doesn't mind peering up my bum, then I'm fine with it too.

What worries me is the stuff. You know, that dreaded gallon of goopy prep solution you have to drink the day before the 'scope to clear out your intestine. Can you take all that stuff in your tiny pouch?

Does it make you dump? I mean, I know the stuff is intended to induce loose stools - that's the whole point of it, after all- but does it give you the other dumping symptoms like the shakes and vomitting?

Thanks for any advice and insights you can provide!

Dixie

If your pre-op I would ask your surgen at your next visit or your PCP...

I have not had one pre or post,

Good Luck~

Oh, I hear you, Van, and I intend to ask my doctors, but sometimes you just want to get the perspective of fellow patients.

I haven't had a colon scope yet...but....the very next day after i had WLS, I had to drink 12 ozs of the barium stuff for the flouroscope test to check for leaks in my pouch. I had to drink it as fast as possible so they could watch it go down. Yep, it made me ***t for 2 days straight, but I didn't have pain or other problems. You'll recover from it fine. All the swallow stuff is made with lactulose......which is a type of artificial sweetener. They use them on diabetics all the time. Just let the tech know when you go in to pick up your jug of Go-lytely.

Thanks, Marie! This is good to know and very reassuring.

I had to do the barium swallow / CAT scan last November. They mixed it with Apple Juice and boy did I dump. They wanted me to drink 2 huge glasses of it and I drank one in 1 hour. I kept explaining that I could not drink fast nor could I drink 2 glasses. They finally listened and wheeled me in for the CAT scan. It worked just fine. Apple Juice still makes me dump.

Thanks, Dale! I appreciate your sharing your experience. Gosh, it must be awkward to be dumping while you're having a CAT scan.

Yeah, especailly when you're suppose to remain still! I'm suprised the stuff was mixed with apple juice. All the preparations I have seen are taken straight. Luckily with the colonoscopy, you drink the stuff the night before to clear the system. So, you should be in your own home if you have any dumping issues. Yes, dumping may make you feel like dying, but it will pass with time.

I've not had a colonostopy but I know that I could never drink all of the stuff that they send home to drink! I'd just inform them that you would drink as much as possible but that you weren't willing to have the "dumping" that goes along with over filling your pouch!!As little as we eat and as small as our pouches are I'd think that a partial of the "go juice" would be a plenty!!Good luck to you!!
