Social Gatherings
Hi everyone, I am pre-op (don't even have a date yet) but I wanted to ask some of you long-time loosers how you deal with social situations? You know like going out to eat, going to family gatherings, and things like that. I mean once you reach your goal, you are still eating far less than the average person your size. Do you always have to provide an explination as to why you are just nibbling here and there or eating such a small portion? I don't want to always have to explain myself. What are some of your reply's? Thanks for reading my post and any feedback is helpful!

With people you are close with there will be no need to explain. At restaurants I just ask for a box or I share with my daughter. I just ask for an extra plate. I don't feel like I owe anyone an explaination but if someone asks I (depends on my mood) either say I can only eat 3 oz at a time or I just wasn't very hungry. it feels weird at first going out but it doesn't bother me anymore. At first I felt like everybody was staring at me but you realize they aren't and its in your head. I hope that helps a little.

I eat normal sized portions now, so it's not noticeably different than the way any other thin person eats.

No one ever asked me but one time why I didnt eat more. People, usually outsiders dont pay attention to what you eat. Those close to you watch what you eat, but dont usually scrutinize you. The one person who asked was my boyfriend. i invited him over to my house for dinner, and when he saw that I barely had anything on my plate he asked why do I have so little on my plate. I had to remind him thats all I could eat. You will find that when you are a year out, even though your portions appear small to you, they are the USDA recommended amount of "regular" portions. A portion of meat should be no larger than the palm of your hand.
Its just different perspective now. Also you wil notice how others eat around you, small people eat smaller portions. You will do fine!

I haven't yet but I have a card from my doctor that asks for them to give me the childs price since I can only eat 3 oz at a time. A friend of mine goes and uses her card all the time.

yes I have eaten at Buffets several times since my surgery. once in awhile I will show them my card at I will pay the senior or childs price. But not so much any more. It just gives me a head trip if I do that. I start thinking that they are watching me then.
I like the buffets now not because I can eat a monster portion. But because I can chose just what I want. If I want a plate of fish and veg then I just get that. Or if I want cottage cheese and lettuce I can get that. I can pick and chose what I want and how much I want. Only two times did I go and end up not eating but 3 bites. One was this week. I am sick with a cold so my cold medicine is making it hard for me to eat or desire to eat. So I ended up only eating a couple of bites. But the couple of bites I did have were fish and cottage cheese. Good choices.

I too go to buffets. I particularly like Onami's all you eat sushi. Since I go out with people, we're there for 1-2 hours. I pay for the opprotunity to socialize, not for the amount of food I can eat.

I have gone a few times, and yes I gripe about the price, but my family loves it, and it is a small price to pay for thin. I have never showed my card, I only got it as a souvenier, but I eat a normal portion, I think anyway. I ejnoy what I eat, and when I am done, I am done, doesn't matter how much it is, I know when I am satiated, and that is where I stop eating. I went to hometown buffet one time in my early post op, and it was not worth it. The thing is that when you get further out you will eat more. I have always since surgery shared my meal with my husband or my granddaughter. The others eat too much and I don't get enough, so I take it home.
I eat anything I want, and no one ever says anything to me.
Something funny though happened at work Thursday night. All the nurses were wanting to see my pictures to see if they remembered me from eight years ago. There was a 500 pound woman in bed at the hospital, for three months, and they all chose to have me go wave my skinny butt in front of her. They wanted to see my pannus, so I dropped my pants and they all started rubbing and pinching, and they were truly in awwe. They love me there, and I really didn't even feel embarrassed, that alone told me prozac is working! lol! I love them too, I call them harpooning fish eaters!
