Default Due to this section I have changed my mind about surgery

Hi everyone,
I'm typing this to let everyone know that I have changed my mind and I'm not going to go through with the surgery. I just finished all the criteria and I should be receiving my pro op appt. any day now. I have been reading constantly researching all that I can find and I have come to this conclusion. It seems to me from all that I have read that all preop people are excited and nervous but can't wait to have this surgery. Then I read all the postop threads and everyone or almost everyone is pretty happy with all their weightloss success and most are having very few issues. Then I went on to research the longterm postop's and I'm seeing a lot of different stories and I'm seeing a lot of side effects that my doctor never has talked about. I'm not trying to upset anyone I'm typing this with my opinions and trust me I usually jump into everything without putting much thought into it but this time I have my 2 and 3 year old to think about and I have done nothing but research and research and I'm coming to the conclusion that so many years down the road the happiness seems to fade and all these different problems are surfacing for some people and I'm too afraid to take these risks. I am 247 pounds and I am able to lose weight but maintaining the weightloss is the challenge. I guess that I feel that my negative list is outdoing my positive list for this surgery. I have thyroid disease and acid reflux and I have no other problems at this time but if I could lose even 50 pounds myself without surgery I could be healthier without the constant worrry that something is going wrong inside of me. I don't care about being thin I just want to be healthy. I have a wonderful husband who could care less about weight he just would prefer me to be around for many years so I guess I will try the weight watchers route again and I'll give myself until I'm 35 to lose some weight and if I have no success then I will reconsider the surgery. Laura, I would like to thank you for being so honest about what could go wrong and I respect your bravery at stating what you have been through. I wish everyone the best and I'm the last person to ever try to upset anyone so sorry if this offends anyone. Lisa

What information did you find with the long term post opers that has you changing your mind? Have you discussed your concerns with Dr. English? He will discuss anything with you and if you tell him what you have read he might be able to give you more information.

Remember everyones experience is different.

Kudos to you for your decision. You sound like a strong person and hopefully you are able to reach your weight loss goals on your own. I for one was not. My pre op weight was 252 at 33 years of age. I too have a 3 year old. My greatest time would have been to chase him in the yard and interact with him. But even that was a struggle at my weight. The heat about killed me, so did exercise. So I for one have not for a minute doubted my decision to have surgery. I also know I would have never lost 80 pounds on my own, ever. I feel like whatever struggles that come down the road I will be able to recognize and deal with. I also battle with food addiction everyday, but that said I know I would not be where I am today without this wonderful tool given to me through weight loss surgery. In a nutshell, gastric bypass surgery had given me my life back. Whatever problems arise down the road will be dealt with then. Good luck to you and I hope everything works out for you.

To be honest, if I was your age and your weight, I wouldn't have had this surgery either. But I do hope that you find the strength and commitment to lose your excess weight so that you can enjoy your life, not only for you, but for your child. Good luck to you.

I have read about strokes, hyperglycemia with the partial removal of the pancreas and the vitamin deficiency what it can cause in the long run. Thanks everyone for replying. Lisa

The surgery isn't for everyone. You did what most people suggest that everyone do - you researched, researched, researched and then you made the decision based upon what you felt was right for you. Best wishes for a healthy life ahead!

I hope you are successful with your new program. The lifestyle changes are the most important. For me, WLS was best - I had gained and lost the weight so many times, never once getting to where I am today. I exercised regularly, never ate fast foods, but had issues with portion sizes of "good" foods. I chose to have surgery when my children were 2 and 4. I was only about 10 pounds heavier than you when I started my weight loss journey. I had lost down to 200 several times in the past 7 years, but mostly with exercise, I just didn't have the portion control tool that I needed so much. I'm 2 years out on March 20, and I've maintained a 125 pound weight loss for over a year now. Because I am on a certain medication b/c of a disease not related to weight, I have blood work every 3 months. I'm healthy as a horse. I take my vitamins, eat right, exercise and I am thankful every day for my weight loss tool. My only issues at times are my image of myself - only now do I see myself as a small person in the world.

I wish you the best.

I have been where you are.I took forever to decide to go forward with this surgery.I tried one last time to lose the weight on my own and I lost a bit but it came back double(my own fault).I have now been postponed due to a thyroid condition and wish I would have had the surgery when I had the chance.I think that it is wonderful that you are making your own choice.I think the amount of weight you have to lose has a lot to do with the choice. If I weighed what you weigh i probably would not do surgery either.I am doing it as a last resort for a life or death situation. In my opinion that is the only reason to do it.I wish you all the luck on losing it the old fashioned way. When it comes down to it wls is just a tool and you work just as hard when you have this tool except its harder to cheat and binge(at first). I just try and pretend I already had surgery and eat the way post oppers do and so far its working pretty well for me.Down 24 pounds.Keep us updated on your progress.
