Default Petersons Hernia?

Hi folks.

I am 21 months post op and since July 07 have struggled with sickness/pain/nausea and poor appetite.

I was diagnosed with a Peterson Hernia and this was mended in emergency surgery.

Its a rare complication in people who have become underweight with the RNY. The bowels remain large and struggle for space, and twist to get comfy and end up twisting into the Petersons Cavity which causes the bowel to die eventually.

Would love to hear from anyone else who ahs had this complication?

Default Not sure if I have it

but they think it's a possibility.

It's one of the things my doc is looking at. So what did they do for you? surgery obviously but what was the major symptoms that caused them to go in?

I'm in a holding pattern to see if it's gets "worse". I'm very interested in this.

My symptoms were chronic pain and sickness. The pain was excrutiating, even morphine did nothing and the pain was so bad, I was retching. I lost an awful lot of weight and ended up with malnutrition so was admitted to hospital.

Surgery put it right, the Petersons Cavity was closed and my bowel stitched in place and the damaged part of the bowel was removed.

Scary but my surgeon was amazing. I trust him with my life.

Default Internal Hernia?

I had an internal hernia I'm not sure it is the same but the description the doctor gave me sounds very much like yours. He went in laproscopically and untwisted. fortunately I have no permanent damage as I acted quickly and so did he. I knew something was not right my upper gut was swollen and I was in major pain I couldn't straighten out without excrutiating pain. The major pain was right above where my belly button should be. When I called his office his nurse sent me straight to the ER and he (who was on his way home after a day of surgery) met me at the ER did a CT scan and took me straight in. He said he almost lost one lady who waited to long and he had to remove so much of her colon she will be fighting malnourishment the rest of her life. I am saying all that because the wait and see thing mentioned above worries me.

Hi Beth. I was admitted twice via A&E and discharged as they could not find anything. The pain was to the left of my belly button and was agony. I had to get on all fours to get any relief. At last my WLS surgeon intervened and took me in and operated. I went undiagnosed for about 2 months and lost an awful lot fo weight which I am struggling to regain. I am doing well now though but I am so glad my wonderful surgeon knew instantly what it was. He is my hero!

You are the first person I've ever heard bring this up - but I had one BEFORE WLS surgery. That was one of my issues going into the Dr . . .and I ended up with WLS eventually. They didn't know it was a Peterson's hernia until he was in there - I had an open surgery. I didn't remember him calling it a hernia - But I do remember the Peterson's . . .. cause it's my last name. My surgeon closed it up.
