I have had no complications due to surgery. I had over 200+ lbs to loose. I am at approx. 95 lbs loss. I've already had my children so that's not an issue. Perhaps if I was in your situation I would look into the VSG surgery since it doesn't have the mal absorbtions issues and they don't re-route anything. Being that you are so young this is a factor in why If I were you I would not choose the band. I have read somewhere that it's only good for 5-10 years max. and has to be re done or removed. I'm not into foreign objects in my body this is just my opinion. I know some that have had gbs and had children with no complications. After gbs your nutrition doesn't absorb as well. If you're pregnant on top of that your baby gets the nutrition and you are at a higher loss. The baby gets what it needs so you need to be more vigalent with vitamines ect... The VSG doesn't work as fast though and doesn't have the greatest weight loss effect. The gbs was my best option at my stage. I wanted the mal absorbtions and dumping that comes along with eating wrong. I needed the slap, so to speak. I needed consiquences to happen if I went off track. It's been quite successful so far. I don't intentionally test my pouch, it's very testy and I can't tolerate numerous foods now, I'm ok with that!
I go out to eat with friends and eat what I can and don't bother with the rest. I share meals with my family and it works out fine. I don't make a big deal out of what I eat cause I know what works for me and when I eat out I choose those things.

Hi there! I just wanted to respond because our situations sound similar. I had the surgery last year when I was 22. I had been heavy my whole life and I had PCOS since I was about 13. I was also concerned about getting pregnant and having children. I spoke to many doctors about this, including a fertility specialist and they all agreed. They said they being unhealthy and especially because PCOS can cause you become infertile, there is a greater chance of having a successful pregnancy being at a healthy weight, not having PCOS and leading a healthy lifestyle. So in other words, gastric bypass is drastic and will change your life, but only for the better. Once you are healthy, it will be better for every aspect of your life, including having children. And you answer your original question, I would do it again in a heartbeat!! I wouldn't even think twice. I wish you all the luck in the world and if you ever have any questions, feel free to contact me!

Knowing what you know now after all you have been through, would you do it again? Was it worth it? What would you have done differently? What would you tell someone who is just starting the process?
I had my mind made up that I wanted a lapband, but my surgeon says I might be a better candidate for bypass. But the cutting, rerouting, dumping syndrome, malnutrition, gas, indigestion, pregnancy concerns, etc. have me very worried. Here's a little about me...
I am in my mid-twenties and have always been heavy. My whole family is heavy. I am starting to really show symptoms of PCOS, which is the main reason my surgeon is suggesting the bypass instead of the lapband. I have only been married for a few years and we do want to have kids eventually. My family celebrations are always centered around food, such as a big dinner for a birthday or holiday.
How will the bypass affect me, and my ability to get pregnant and carry a child? Does the difference in diet (when compared to a normal person) put a cramp in your style? Are you still able to eat with others who don't have such stringent dietary restrictions?
I am just worried that the bypass is too severe for me. Any thoughts?

I wish I could have done it at 14 instead of 39. How different would my life have been?

Yes!! Yes!!! Yes!!!!
I would do it again, and again!
I am older than you. I was 37 when I had it done in November of 2006. This has been the best thing I have ever done form myself…ever!
I have no complications. I give credit to my awesome surgeon and his outstanding staff for most of that. My only suggestion is research your surgeon. See how many re-dos he has had. Ask him for stats on HIS patient complications. Etc.
I have to say that I knew I could never handle the lap-band. The idea of a foreign object in me for the rest of my life just skeeved me out. Also, the weigh-loss is not as good.

That's actually not true... What they have found is that long term, the weight loss for both procedures is very similar..... the difference is in the short term.
Initial wieght loss with RNY is about 50% faster the first year than that of the Lapband. You don't see the results as quickly, which can be fustrating but on the other hand your body loses the weight slowly so your metabolism doesn't get as messed up.
There's pros & cons to both sides of this topic.

Despite suffering from nausea/sickness/bowel problems and poor appetite and now being underweight and being in hospital for some time due to complications and malnutrition I would definately do it all over again. Nothing compares ot being so obese you cant breathe/walk properly so YES I definately would if I could have the same surgeon!!!

No hesitation.
I would jump in with both feet again. I was excited when I had the op and didn't stop talking until I went under. For me it was do or die. But my health and my newly gained mobility outweigh any side effects for me.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat. The surgery got me off of my butt and helped me change my life. I am also in my mid twenties and have parent/sibling who are MO. Our family loves to eat too.
Believe me when I say it will make things hard on the people around you but, in the end you aren't doing this for them. You are doing this for you.
I don't regret any of it for a second.
