Taking ibuprophen
I had my gastric bypass in 2003. I am doing well but have a chronic pain problem in my back. As I am limited to the kinds of medications I can take I am wondering how much Ibuprophen I can take without doing any real harm to my new stomach. I am taking Norco for the pain but I also need an anti-inflamatory occasionaly.
Does anybody out there have any real answers for me?

I'm with Whitney!!!!!!! I had two ulcers since surgery and never took NSAIDS since I had WLS. It's HORRIBLE to deal with an ulcer after this surgery. It is extremely painful and your nutrition suffers greatly. I have chronic back problems and need a fusion. I was sent to a pain managment dr. after my WLS and have been put on Darvocet N-100 daily for the pain. Yes, I still suffer, but it's better than it would be without anything. You can also have injections in your back to help control the pain. I do this too. They are wonderful when you need them if they help. There are alternatives, so please do some research and talk with your doctors about after surgery. Good luck!

I know my surgeon said NSAIDS for the first year was a no-no. I had pulled a muscle in my bakc at 11 months out and they advised me know, but if I needed it that bad, only take the OTC dose 200mg for ibuprophen, and only for a couple of days. I passed. I pulled a groin muscle this summer and held off as long as I could, but finally broke down and took aleve. I only took 2 tabs every 12 hrs for a total of 3 doses. Finally, I had gotten relief so I stopped. It's best to avoid NSAIDS because they can do damage to the GI track. Taking them once in a while in small and very short doses most likely will not hurt, but sounds like you have a more chronic and on going issue. Call your doctor to find out what alternatives are out there. On some pains and headaches, I rub Tiger Balm on the area. Most times, I get good pain relief. Don't know if that would work for you or not. I hope you get some relief soon. Take care, Sue

Just had this converstion with my doctor
yesterday... here's what she said...
If you are under one year post op...do not take it unless absolutely necessary and always take a pepcid or prevacid or something along those lines for a couple days after taking it...
Over one year post op... you can take it once in a while, Like once a week but try not to if somethign else works.... Daily is a no-no for more than 3 days and if you do go 3 or 4 days then ask your doc for somethign else like celebrex ...
she also mentioned that after 12 to 18 months post op it's okay to take time released pills again....go figure
