WOW!

And I thought by having the surgery, the worst was over!

Zen - you gave me a lot to think about and I thank you for it.

Thank you, Zen, very much. What valuable insight from a long-term post-op. This kind of wisdom is what I came to TT for in the first place.

Default Well Done Zen

I read that and it causes me to stop and think.... either way I go theres a lifetime of work ahead of me....

Your insight is wonderful.

I'm way under goal right now and eating like a crazy person to just get the loss to stop or slow down. Slipped into old habits like grazing all day... I worry that when they reverse this surgery I'll not be able to use good habits to help me keep thin...

I'll keep pluggin away at it though... one does what one must.....

Zen, great post! This should be required reading for all pre-op WLS patients! I think a lot of us think that it will eventually be over. I was lucky. I have an aunt who is 6 years post-op and I talk to her on the phone fairly regularly. My aunt combined with all the wonderful people on her keep me grounded and make me remember why I had this surgery and what I need to do to make the most of it, not just now but for the rest of my life!

For us long-termers....the honeymoon is way over and life is simply life. Nope, we can never forget who we are. At the same time, it's not an issue that I've had surgery. My friends have forgotten how it was. People know I've had it and it's not the focus of my life. My new friends think it's cool and don't ask questions. I don't let it particularly define me. I'm simply a person who had bypass surgery and have certain awarenesses to live with. Hmmm....many of he events that occurred during the process, a divorce, a new job, a new home are no longer a big deal in my life. Time does soothe the hurt and it becomes a memory. When I over do it, it's a simple oops and I don't freak out over a few pounds, dumping, up chucking, or whatever those concerns were before; it's a part of my life now and mostly a memory.

Default Well said...

You said it all, Zen, and then some...most appreciated. I'm dealing with things that the people around me don't--like how to fart discreetly, and with Halloween candy everywhere, the knowledge that one misstep, and I'm throwing up or in pain or ill half the afternoon. There are some days it's a minefield...

All that said, I'd rather be here than two years ago!
