Default Pain meds dont work!!!

Do any of you post opers feel the same way? I feel like I have to "double dose" which I know is bad for the liver, to feel any relief... which barely lasts.

I remember pre op 1 Vicodin would have me spinnin'.
I cannot get any pain relief from meds anymore... how about you guys?

Bridge, Yea, meds of all kinds are different. I would really love to see a study about the absorbtion of meds post surg. I know Ambien effects me differently now than before. It makes me wonder about things like blood pressure pills or heart meds.....any of you medical folks got 2bits you would like to offer.

Thumbs up

I just stopped using my Vicodin ES 750MG for my dental work.I feel like I get high faster but come down just as fast.

Before surgery..I was given demerol and was HiGH for hours...

I have noticed since surgery...sedatives excite me instead of relax me...almost like a child on cold medicine~Sometimes little kids don't pass out on Benadryl they freaking go nuts. That's me now

I'm sure that was you before too dear......hehehehe Geeeeezzzzz I'm bad! LOL I love you Amy!!!!!! Don't hate me!!!! ROFL

Oh yeah.....PS......My pain med seems to not work as well since surgery either, BUT I was on chronic pain med before I had surgery. I noticed after I had surgery that I couldn't come off the morphine pump because of pain and so I had to stay an extra night in the hosp. because the liquid Vicodin was not touching what I was feeling! Maybe it was just intolerance to the Vicodin though considering I "was" on it before surgery. Now, I am not taking it.....I take Darvocet N 100, which is alot better for me and not as addictive. (Which is a VERY good thang) I just suffer more from pain now. But yeah.......I think our absorption is different. I notice my pain control don't last near as long either. Oh I'll shuddup now......I feel like I'm not shedding any light and I don't count in this one. (Because I'm special, ya know..hehehehe) J/K I mean because I am on chronic pain med and so I could be building up a tolerance.

I have been on kidney medicine and antibotics seems like my whole pregnancy and they couldn't clear up my kidney infections, I would get a little bit of relief but as soon as I was done with the meds I would have another infection within days.......Poof they found out that I wasn't getting enough of it absorbed put me on liquid (gross) but it worked...I was out of pain faster and the kidney infection hasn't come back yet and it has been a month!

Everything effects me SUPER strongly. Pre-op... I could handle two or three vicodin no problem. Now just ONE makes me really loopy. Cough medicine gets me buzzed. You know I can't drink more then one small cocktail or I lose my mind. Even coffee gives me a "buzzed" feeling. Lots of medications make me feel very nauseaus too. Maybe you should contact a pain management clinic, or specialist. They have ways that can help and nerve numbing prescriptions.

I think we don't get the full effect of the pain meds. I know that I have to take more than I would have pre wls..and I always need two courses of antibiotics..hummm???

Also, I noticed that time released meds do not work anymore.

Medications, like any chemical....nutrients, sugars, fats...get in and out faster. However, if the medication is the long acting kind...it might not get absorbed at all because it takes a stomach and some guts to properly absorb meds. Post bypass, to get any relief, you have to take smaller doses more frequently.....it's also much easier to over dose......I OD on flagyl...even at the the normal dose.....oh gawd...it was horrible when I recently had 3 days straight of 102 temps....the meds just didn't work well enough! I ended up needing a shot in the butt to get rid of the infection when it normally would have taken just a day or 2 of oral meds.

They still affect me the same way. They knock me on my arse anywhere from 10-30 minutes after I take them.

I can't even take a tylanol PM or the next day I can't even wake up.
On the other hand I was taking naproxin occasionally and I was getting massive bruises from little bumps and my doc said not to use anything but the non-asprin.
