Question Hypoglycemia Anyone?

Hi gang,

I am 22 months post gastric bypass and have lost about 80 pounds. I am at goal weight. On the 13th of April my husband came home to find me unconcious, foaming at the mouth and making strange loud breathing noises. He called 911 and the EMT's found my sugar level to be 22, my temperature 91 degrees and my BP quite low. They gave me some Glucogon and took me to the ER. I was soaked with perspiration. At the ER for about 5 hours, my blood glucose stabilized and with the aid of a warming blanket, my temp and BP came up back to normal. They did some urine and blood tests but only found a UTI. My internest said that I had a seizure and did some tests which all came back normal. She sent me to an Endocrinologist who said I have rebound hypoglycemia and gave me a glucometer. (I have never been diabetic) I had a CT of the abdomen and tests to see if my adrenal glands were functioning properly and both tests checked out fine. I had a GTT on Friday and should get the results today. The doctor thinks I am both hypoglycemic and diabetic.

Since monitoring my blood, it has been as low as 44 after eating and a high of 227 after my evening meal. I don't know for how long my glucose has been so off the charts but I do know that I have felt confused and lethargic for months now.

Does anyone else have this problem?

I am sorry to hear of this traumatic event. I am glad you came through it OK.

Does your diet include any sugar, sugar alcohols or carbs. Has your diet strayed from the strict diet you had many months ago. I know I had a Hypoglycemic(SP) reaction from my diet. I know this is a very basic ? and I am sorry I can not add any more insight.

You know, I meant to start a thread asking about post-op diabetes diagnosis... seems like more often than not, someone has it PRE-op and the surgery resolves it. But I have a friend who had the surgery 2-3 years ago, and she was just diagnosed with diabetes as well, where she didn't have it before the surgery either.

I hope they can get you stabilized soon Mary Alice, and that everything goes smoothly for you from here on out.

Mary Alice,
I hope everything gets straightened out for you very soon. How frightening for both your husband and you! My experience was quite the opposite. Pre surgery, I was diagnosed with diabetes (no meds though), I had to go through all the educational classes on living with diabetes, they outfitted me with a glucometer...then I had my surgery....After my last blood tests, I got a call from my primary doctor's office...I thought they found something wrong and was really scared...why do they just leave a generic message? My mind immediately goes to the 'fatal disease of the month club'...What they wanted to tell me was that my latest numbers were right in the middle of NORMAL!!! and my cholesterol was down...The human body is such a strange and wonderful thing. I hope you have some answers very soon.

I must admit that I did "fall off the wagon" not watching the amount of fat or sugar in my diet. I have had dumping syndrome (not diarrhea) where I get disoriented, sweaty and go to sleep it off. Usually after having too much sugar.

I am still waiting for the results of the GTT...

When it comes to much sugar and your new body design. Hypoglycemia is dumping....... Your small intestine sees all of that sugar and dumps tons of insulin (dumping) You can stop the dumping just stop taking in sugar...

To the Dr.s out there I hope I did OK explaining this in layman's terms...

Go back to a healthy diet design for your new body design.....

I mean this in the nicest of ways.......

She's 2 years out.....and her BS swings so high, even on just 5 pretzels or a 1/2 cup of milk. The doctor wants to put her on meds and have her keep a strict diet.
