For me I was all nervous about my first fill. In the end it wasn't painful and they found the port right away. The biggest "pain" is the pinch through the scar tissue to get into the port. My doctor had me bring my legs up while on my back which I guess helps push the port to the skin better. My next fill was a little harder as the darn thing moved around and the needle kept bumping on the port..that felt funny. Then afterward I was giving some water to make sure it wasn't to tight and sent on my way.
You'll be okay. Just relax and it will be done with before you know it.

I had my first fill back in March 09 and it was fine. I was really nervous - as I thought the port was back to front, it turned out to be twisted and facing down, so the needle couldnt be put in whilst standing up,, but after laying down, pop it just went in... didnt feel it much (and Im rubbish with pain!)
so dont worry the only thing is the needle/syringe is really big, but dont look at it !! I doesnt hurt :.) honest. xxx good luck

Default First Fill

I just had my first fill last week, and my mistake was letting the doctor do it instead of the nurses who do tons of them every day. He had trouble finding the port, and it hurt a little while he looked for it. He ended up doing it under fluoroscopy which took about 15 seconds- no pain at all. I was a little worried at first when he couldn't find it, but it really turned out to be no big deal. Actually, when I drank the water afterward, it turned out I couldn't handle the 2 cc, so he had to go back in (under fluoroscopy still) and take some out. Still- no pain at all. So I had a pretty eventful 1st fill, but I'm ready to go back for my next one. It's really no big deal. The needle is long, but very skinny. Just don't look at it, you'll be fine. It really goes fast. I think there is a big difference between needles that just go into the skin or muscle and ones that go into veins. This is like an insulin prick, you really don't feel much of anything. You don't even need a band-aid. Congratulations on your first fill! Once it's over, you'll be excited to get this show on the road (and the next one will be nothing).
