Question Getting enough protein?

I am 2 weeks 3 days post op and I am on the pureed diet. I look at all the nutrition facts for the protein and everything seems to have more carbs then actual protein. Anyone have any advice on what foods are high in protein and work during the pureed period? I've been going by my doctors list but the amount of food I am able to eat I am worried that I am not getting enough protein in and those shakes I am getting tired of!

Thanks!

I'm almost 8 months post-op (I had gastric bypass) and I still have a hard time getting enough protein without a shake once a day. So you might have to just try to find shakes you like. This blog has some great shake recipes: theworldaccordingtoeggface.

However, some good foods for the puree stage include:

fat free refried beans, with a little shredded cheese and salsa on top

ricotta cheese, nuked, with some marinar sauce and a little grated parmesan cheese on top (I still eat this, it's yummy)

Fage 2% yogurt (very high in protein- unfortunately I can't buy it where I live, but you should look for it)

and you can add unflavored protein powder to other foods. Don't add to much or you might get a grainy texture, but you can add a little to things like yogurt, mashed potatoes, cream of wheat, etc.

After I was banded I lived on cottage cheese, yogurt and sugar free pudding. I had a hard time getting in my protein too but you have to force yourself....a little bit at a time.

Good luck!!!

I am on the pureed diet for 4 weeks post op. I am finishing up week 3. I have pureed tuna with a little lemon juice and nonfat yogurt and a little mayo. It is not too bad. I have pureed scrambled eggs with some milk and lofat cheese. I have pureed chicken that has been in a crock pot with the lo fat cream of chicken soup so it is moist. I also had tomato soup with milk and dried milk added and lo fat cheese. But I did notice it had sugar in it so won't do that again.
I am kind of going between those things for my meals of protein. Also do cottage cheese and lite yogurt.
I am going to try the refried beans, never was a big fan but I am so tired of the above I think I will give them a try!
Also, I made a shake with the chocolate unjury, skim milk and a tablespoon of peanut butter and 1/2 banana. I used it as two servings. It was very good.
Hope this helps.

Hi Meghan- Don't worry too much if you're a little shy on the protein as I'm assuming the mushy phase won't last long and once you're on solids it's easy. Any of the canned meats work well (tuna as mentioned, salmon, chicken). I also ate the refried beans with a little cheese and salsa ontop. I used a lot of any greek yogurt with some SF preseves ontop. I NEVER had/have to have a protein shake, although I do following a fill sometimes (with lots of fruit/milk), but very few protein shakes period. I drank lots of skim milk with SF chocolate syrup (I hate milk but it helps with the protein). My doc also let us eat 6 smaller meals a day at this point so it's easier to get the numbers up.

What's funny is that about the time you figure out the high protein mushies is when they'll move you on to the solids and then these are exactly the foods you shouldn't eat with the band (sliders). Hang in there, the lifetime diet is coming soon! -BG
