Coffee.
I love coffee. Always have. I asked my Dr about it, and he said coffee was just fine. Day after surgery they gave me tea. Tea is really popular in Mexico, as this is where I was banded. I typically drink 4-6 cups of coffee a day. I really like the taste.
Anyways I also drink my water, minimum of 64oz if I dont drink my water, I dont get my coffee....:-) that is how I justify it to myself as kind of a reward.
As far as carbonation. It is terrible for you. I love beer. I love every different flavor of beer. Unfortunatly beer is carbonated, and carbonation settles in small quantity like sipping it over a 30 to 45 minute period, I wouldnt drink the beer because of the carbonation, so I sought alternatives. I drank guiness, but still a little more than I like, so I started making my own, and leaving the priming sugar out, no carbonation. Now I have to focus on not drinking too much, as it may be carbonation-less its not calorie free. :-( So I focus on my goals and drink one carbonationless beer a week, and call myself satisfied. Although if drinking the beer each week throws off my losing streak ( standard weightloss LB's per week ) I would stop drinking beer cold turkey. One thing I noticed, after surgery I was drinking lots of juices, especially cranberry cocktail. I wasnt losing much, so I adjusted my diet, and stopped the juices and focused on water, and protein, and I started really losing. I wonder if others have run into this?
Well, thats my 2 cents, I am glad I have lost 62 LBs since September, and that is what really matters. Keep the goals, and keep on losing. :-)

I've never tried soda since surgery, and don't plan to. There was one time, about 6 months out...I tried a few sips of my friends gin and tonic..I was in major pain for about an hour after...never again....no carbonation for me. As for Starbucks, I'm hooked. I drink decaf or 1/2 caf, but still, love the stuff! I don't drink nearly enough water...I've been thinking I need to step up the water consumption....so, my goal is to drink less bucks and more water!!!

I simply adore diet dr pepper...
I'm having the gastric bypass...all soda is a no no forever? or just post op for a set period of time?
I probably know this answer, I just dont want to accept it.
I think I'll have to keep my coffee, the withdrawals will be killer.

I can't speak with much experience as I'm just now 3 days out from the banding. But - the eve after my surgery, I coerced one of the nurses into making me a fresh pot of coffee. I had two cups worth! The next morning, the new nurse wasn't going to give me a cup, so I had to convince my doc's PA that my stomach was "up to it".
I will say that so far I've cut my coffee intake in half.
My doc claims that any carbonated drink will cause me trouble from now on -- so I am getting used to substituting with Lipton Diet Green tea with Citrus. Not too bad actually.

This is really an eye opener: Water or Coke? We all know that water is important but I've never seen it written down like this before...
WATER:
1. Seventy-five percent of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
5. Lack of water is the number one trigger of daytime fatigue.
6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
8. Drinking five glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.
9. Drinking any other beverage does not count for your quota of water. You still need at least eight 8-oz glasses per day -- more if you're a large person.
And now for the properties of COKE:
1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in two days.
3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.
4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.
5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca- Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil. The drippings mix with the Coke, which gives you a sumptuous brown gravy.
8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains.
9. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.
FYI:
1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8 (normal pH is 7.0). It will dissolve a nail in about
four days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.
2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) commercial trucks must use the Hazardous material placards reserved for Highly-Corrosive materials.
3. The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!
Now the question is: would you like a Coke or a glass of water? Have a great day and share this with others.

hi
i too was told i couldnt drink carbonated drinks but not told anything about coffee or alcohol,
some have some havent, to be honest i can see why they would say not to drink carbonated drinks, it doesnt only bloat the stomache it can rott it as well and if you think about it the band has made a thinnner pouch of the stomache which means its probably more likely to be effected by carbonated drink, saying this wheni go out socialising i have maybe one or two small fizzy drinks then i swap it for a juice just to be on the safe side, as for tea, coffee and even alcohol i drink it but i dont over do it. everyone is different and will be able to eat and drink things that thers cant,

Well, my doc said coffee and tea were OK. Carbonated beverages were not so good, but he wouldn't say no... just be careful. Same with Alcohol (although that is mostly the empty calories thing, lots of calories in a thin liquid that the band has not way of stopping).
I don't drink, so the alcohol isn't a problem.
I do drink coffee, although in the past month, I have gone from 2 pots a day to 3 cups (sometimes 4 on workdays). (I drank my first post-op cup 1 day after surgery).
I drank a caffiene free diet coke yesteday, 3 weeks after banding. It was slow (20 ounces in 3 hours). No problem. But if I do start that habit again, it will be slow (not the 4 litres a day I used to drink).
And I am keeping lots of water going with it... much more than I drank pre-op.
So I have slowed, but not stopped.
