Iron def (anemia)
Well I putting a post out to ask about Iron def (anemia). I was going to be having surgery for my tummy tuck and hernia this fri and I can't because my blood count was 9. How do I get my iron count up. I am taking more Iron, eating fresh spinach, and more vitamin B 12 sub. Is there any thing else that would help to get it up my May 15th. This is when they rescheduled it.
If anyone has any ideas let me know.

I have had a big bout with anemia.
My surgery for TT and hernia repair was 3-06 at that time, my iron was 9 and they gave me an iron infusion a week before surgery. It went up to 10 for surgery day, but after surgery it went down to 5 and I needed a blood transfusion. (luckily from my hubby)
For the past year my levels have been as high as 11.1 down to currently 9.1.
I consistantly have issues with it and I am about to see a hematologist next month to see what is up.
I passed out earlier this month and it really makes me tired.
I wish I had better news for you, but if I were you, I would get it up as much as you can before surgery!

i am actually right there with you both. I was found iron deficient after Kelly examined my blood last friday. I thought the weakness meant that i needed to eat more.
kidney beans. liver, and tuna are good sources of iron. I read that it helps to combine it with vitamin C for better absorption....so...kidney beans and OJ

Vitron-c
I take Vitron-c, it is a high potency iron supplement with vitamin c to help your body absorb the iron more effectively. I get it at target or walmart, behind the counter. I take one each other day and two each other day. My iron levels were perfect at 6 months. Maybe give that a try.

Hi! My Iron Level is 21. I haven't been able to get the liquid Iron since surgery....My surgeon is referring me to a Hemotologist. My surgeon's nurse said my platelets are low. Does it sound like the 2 are related (Low Iron causing the Platelets to be Low, too?)

Mel... you need to call your surgeon and ask these questions.. please.. you have been asking this questions for over a week and it doesn't appear that there is anyone that can offer you the answers you need. You really do need to call your doctor, hon.

No need to apologize.. I just think that given all that you've said, a call to your doctor is your best bet. He is the one that has the best knowledge of what is going on with you, personally. Good luck
