Default October Newbie

Hi, I've been reading this forum for the past couple of days and want to join the October newbies. I had Gastric Bypass on Thursday, 10/29/09 at about 4:30 pm. So it is day 6 post surgery. I have no idea how I did this so fast: It is totally out of character for me. I had a physical on 9/2 and my Dr. said he rarely recommends bypass surgery, but thought I should have it. I said I would think about it and check it out. One appointment led to another, insurance pays 100%, they were ready to schedule, so here I am.
Highest weight 346/day of surgery 329/today319. I have no idea of a goal weight; maybe 175? I am 5'9" and think I was 175 in my early 20's. I felt skinny then. That was 30 years ago.
I look forward to being part of this forum.

Congrats on your surgery, Kim. I'm a post-op newb also...mine was 10/27. I feel great physically, however, gagging at the very thought of going through another day of clear liquids!

Your going through surgery in like 6 weeks from start to end is indeed rare, especially with insurance covering (expect everyone to ask what your insurance plan is!). While it has indeed been a whirlwind, it's kind of surreal for me form first thoughts, deciding day, surgeon visit, insurance hoops of hell...well, time seemed to drag through all the waiting, but in hindsight is indeed has been a whirlwind as well for me, and our journey has only just begun!

Best of luck to you and please come to the October Stapler's thread if you haven't already!

Hi welcome to T.T. Boy, I think you've set a record here for the fast pre-op ever!!!! If not a record you sure must come close. You are really in the midst of a whirlwind aren't you? Quick pre-op and now the journey (and work) begins. I think your goal of 175 sounds pretty reasonable for a 5'9" person, but you can also set small incremental goals along the way as well. I like to just work in 10 lb increments (my "decades") and go from there. My next big marker will be to enter onederland - 26 lbs to go for that!
I hope you'll post often and keep us up to date with your progress. If you have any problems, concerns or just need some support, post yur questions and you'll have loads of people come to your aid. Its a wonderful place!

Thanks for the welcome. I'm really struggling right now. I am not liking this whole process and thinking I made a huge mistake. I've lost 40 lbs since 10/29. I am fighting myself to get enough protein, gagging on every supplement, and dehydrated. I am also dizzy, which I think is from not taking the antidepressants like I was. I was on time released Effexor and Wellbutrin, but am now taking a non time released version twice a day. The new versions upset my stomach, so I avoid taking them.

Is this the buyer's remorse I've read about?

Hi Kimee - so sorry to hear you are not feeling well. Let me congratulate you on losing the 40 lbs ... that is a wonderful start. You really have to get enough hydration to feel good and its not a good idea to avoid your meds. First of all, call your doctor and get in there for a visit and talk about how the new meds upset your stomach. Why were you taken off the time released, do you know? Have you tried different types of protein supplements? If you do a search on here you'll see many threads about them and can get samples sent to you of all sorts. You are at a difficult point - just past three weeks. It seems to be where a lot of us get that "remorse". After you are well hydrated and getting in some good nutrition I think you'll begin to feel much better. Of course without the anti-depressants in your system you are probably slipping back into the negative world. I went off my Prozac (on my own) and regretted it so now I make sure I get my pill every day and what a difference!!!! Like I said above, start with a call or visit to your doctor and try G2 gatorade to help hydrate. Protein is very important, but first of all get the liquids in. I hope to hear from you again, and that you feel better real soon.

Thanks for the encouragement. I feel much better today, but need to get an appt. with the Dr. I did find more info about the protein drinks and am trying some different types.

The one I like most is Max Protein in Vanilla - I can add other flavours and bits of fruit to change it up. I ran out last week, bought a different type and YUK - it actually made me sick to my stomach. I just ordered (and received today) a 5 lb tub of my fav - I was craving it and just finished my evening shake now. I don't know if they offer samples, but you might try their website, just google Max Protein. It has a nice sweet vanilla flavour - I mix mine with water because in milk I was having some tummy issues. Keep in touch! Glad you are feeling a little better better - keep posting - I'll look forward to hearing more from you
