Default and one more newbie!

I had my rny on October 12th, by October 19th I had lost 11lbs from the surgery! My surgeon was the wonderful Dr. Nick Nicholson in Plano, TX!!! Love him!!!! Thankfully, all went well and I'm heading back to work!

The worst part is protein!!! I'm struggling trying to find sufficient protein supplements that won't make me gag. I find the one's I'm trying either taste like arse going down or arse afterwards!!!! Any suggestions???

Also, I don't sleep anymore and I don't know why. I would love a goodnights sleep again and I've tried all my old pills and tricks but nothing works! 1:00AM and I'm wired like I had a cup of Starbuck's with a quad of expresso! Any suggestions???

How long did it take the insurance to approve your surgery? How long did it take to get a surgery date? If you dont mind me asking.

Hard to say. When you say you've tried your old pills, what are you taking? I have to take two <generic> unisom pills every night or I am wide awake. Because they're gel caps, I hold them under my tongue till they soften up a bit before I swallow them so they work. Otherwise, they just kind of pass through my system w/o as much effect. Some nights, if I'm really struggling, I take three.

As for the protein, again, not sure what you've already tried. Try going to the advanced search function and do a search on the tag "protein" for lots of ideas, recipes and links to various types that people have found that work for them. Know that in time, you'll most likely be able to get by w/o having to use the shake unless you really want to use them.

Good luck!

Default New here too

Hi
I had gastric bypass on 3-05-07. Dropped 100 pounds in the first year. I had a bad bout of depression earlier this year and gained 25 back, but I have been able to lose 10 of that since I switched jobs and got back on my antidepressant.

I don't have any kids yet, but have 2 adorable puppies--chihuahua/pug/weiner dog crosses. They keep me busy.

Anyone else here live in Vegas? I'm looking for a group

Don't mind at all! I have Aetna so basically the timeline was a little like this:
1. Seminar (I actually went to the seminar a year earlier. I wasn't ready to stop smoking and my surgeon won't touch you if you smoke)

2. I contacted the WLS office and told them I was ready. Although I had been obese all my life my medical records weren't sufficient for Aetna to just let me fly through. So I opted to see the dietician for EXACTLY 90 days and the pre-counseling with the surgeon. After that it took Aetna 2 days to approve and 2 weeks later I had my date!!! Yippee

As for the sleepy time stuff...I've tried Klonopin (which use to work wonderfully), Benedryl, and the pain meds! Maybe I will ask for Unisom because this insomnia is for the birds!!!

I'm still sampling proteins but the New Whey Protein just taste terrible to the point I gag. I've sampled another brand (my thoughts aren't very coherent since I'm tired) but I think it gave me a small bout of diarrhea. That tasted a little bit better but I didn't like the after effects. Now I'm drinking the Pure Protein....it's ehh better but I don't look forward to drinking it! I'll keep searching....thanks for the input it is really appreciated!

Unisom is over the counter stuff.. but again, in gel caps so I need to soften it a bit for it to work. I don't know what Klonopin is.. but assume it's a script? Maybe you just need different dosing?

As for the protein..check out this link: Is all protein created equal?

Which shows those protein bullets are useless for those of us with bypass.

Please do try for a whey isolate, not collegen protein.

You're welcome! It is so important to get a good healthy protein that we can actually use! Try Vitalady.com - Protein Supplements, Vitamins & Minerals, and Safe Snacks! for samples. And you can get chike protein which a lot of people like at Bariatric Vitamins | Celebrate Bariatric Supplements | Bariatric Surgery & Nutrition (where you'll also find my FAVORITE vitamins for post op life!)

Good luck (and good luck sleeping.. I've been an insomniac for far too long.. the unisom usually always works though on occasion, I still have trouble.)
