Hi:

I just signed up the other day with a goal of being able to search for answers to the thousands of questions that will come to mind as I begin to prepare for and live with a gastric bypass. Actually I am thinking the lapband is for me even though the odds are better with other options. I've tried to lose weight many times; Weight Watchers (Twice), TOPS, and other food programs. Always some success, but it all catches up to me sooner or later. I guess you're in the same boat, so this is not news. The other issue is medical problems; Type II diabetes; High Blood Pressure, Acid Reflux and Sleep Apnea. I'm told the lapband can fix a lot of this, but other options have a greater chance. But, I am not sure of anything yet. It's all just a little confusing and I admit that I am scared to death that I might regret this.

I am 65, weigh 244 lbs with a BMI of 35. I belong to a Gym where I find my way for a mile on a treadmill 2-3 times a week. But my eating and drinking habits keep me at my current weight. Yes, I like beer and potato chips. But I also like broccolli, in fact I love all green veggies. I've lost more weight on water and veggies than on any other diet. But, it gets old fast.

So here I am "Searching" for the answers. I will be asking and listening, as I will also be reading about you.

If I forget to tell you, Thanks for the help!

Welcome to TT. I hope you can find some good information here. As well as some support.

Deciding which surgery to go with is a tough decision. If you do a search for the tag "deciding," you can read lots of posts about how others made their decision.

Default Hi

Hey Mtn Man,
Good luck on your search. Your surgeon will be the one to guide you in your choice. I was also thinking lap band until I discussed it with my surgeon and decided that the Roux-en-Y was more appropriate.

MM, I have a much higher BMI than you, but I went with gastric bypass because of the very quick impact it has on diabetes. I also have the apnea, high blood pressure and acid reflux.

It might be best to attend one of the surgeon's seminars to sort the options out. They cost nothing and give a pretty good overview of the pros and cons.

Welcome, and good luck!

Hi Mountain Man and Welcome to Thinner Times.

I'm not a band fan, mostly because of the high cheat factor, followed by the fill game -- but ultimately, because of those here at TT who've had the band and have gone on to have an RNY and the band removed, it's the depression that a WLS did not work, or another weight loss failure AND the time and toll it takes, sometimes years, telling people that the surgery failed or you failed it... major downer!

On the bright side: The band has worked for many and only you will know which process will be the right choice for you - regardless of your age. Be honest with yourself and your eating habits. You must be comfortable with your decision.

I had the band. I was comfortable with my decision. I didn't have a chance to see it work because I was in the ER two weeks later having it removed. But that's just my sad story, not the only story. There's lots of success out there.
