Welcome, elizabeth-jap! We are glad to have you here and will do what we can to help you find the answers you need. You'll find many people here with great experience and information to share. Most of your questions are already answered here, so if no one is around to respond quickly, just do a search and you'll likely find plenty.

WLS is a tool, but the work still has to be done by you. It is not the easy way out. Your long term success will be because you make the diet and fitness changes necessary for a healthier lifestyle. The first few weeks after surgery are the hardest, trying to cope with grieving the loss of eating/food as your friend. When you think you are hungry, take the time to pause and decide if you are dealing with a physical hunger or if it is just head hunger-the habit you need to break. It gets better, and eventually you will be able to eat again. If you are feeling hungry, check in with your surgeon and your nutritionist. DON"T take any shortcuts or eat anything before you get the go ahead. You could end up with severe repercussions as far as your healing goes.

You can do this. We know because we've been where you are. Hang in there, good luck, and welcome to the loser's bench!

I had my RNY 4 1/2 wks ago and my head still wants me to eat ALL the time! We constantly argue over who is going to win. The over all fact that i'm terrified of dumping keeps me on the straight and narrow! It's a hard game to play in the beginning but it's slowly getting better. I wish I had been more informed about that part of the surgery before hand so I would know what to expect.

Hey pbeck-welcome to TT! Just take it one day, or one argument, at a time. It will continue to get better, but it will continue to be work, too. You can do it. There's always someone here if you need a hand to help you through.
It sounds as though you have a good attitude in the face of battle! Good luck winning more than not and welcome to the loser's bench! It's an exciting place to be!

You're still on liquid and soft food, so my question is, what's you're eating schedule like?

The reason I ask is that not all programs are equal. Some insist on breakfast - lunch - dinner ONLY with no snacking and other programs (like mine) included 3 snacks a day (and IMO, a better program).

So early post-op, because the food has no texture, the food does not stay in your stomach very long. Getting that 'full' feeling can be quite difficult AS it has been said, "head hunger" can be quite an issue.

Anyway: to describe my program, my doc/NUT (NUTritionist) program, at your stage, had me consuming 4 oz something every hour -- either mushy food, protein shake or water. 4oz is 1/2 cup, not quite a lot but quite enough for your pouch... as your foods become more textured, 1/2 cup can be too much. The reason you consume something so often is to combat those hunger feelings. For me, I had to schedule myself to eat because I did not feel hungry AND that's probably because I was on THIS schedule. (REMEMBER your protein shake counts as your liquid).

Know that things will change and WILL get better. There will be a "normal" for you that will fit your lifestyle. There will be a "normal" during every post-op phase. What you need to do is relax and take each day as it comes.

As I progressed to more textured foods I consumed every 1.5 hours -- eventually to a schedule where I ate ever 2 to 3 hours and drank in between -- this schedule I keep, but eat every 3 to 4 hours instead. The schedule is basically breakfast - snack - lunch - snack - dinner - dessert, where the snack/dessert is a yogurt, cottage cheese or some fruit if you can handle it. EVERYTHING needs to be journalled and you need to do the calorie and protein numbers for all of your consumables.

BTW: Welcome to TT, Elizabeth. The ride can be uneventful, or it can can get bumpy, and you may even hit some road blocks. Ask your questions anytime. We're always here to help you through.

OH, and even I thought my surgery didn't take. I think many of us had a twinge of that fear during our 1st few weeks post-op, and those early stalls -- and the losses continued anyway: eventually!

Elizabeth - welcome to T-T!

Early out, I found warm drinks more comforting and mentally, satisfying.

I didn't handle broth well but the lower sodium/fat Progresso, Campbells Select Harvest etc. Chicken Noodle and like soup strained of it's bits really hit the spot.

Default Im back from surgery and what an Experience2

'

good morning TT'ers

Well spent two days in the hospital and returned home on friday. As of today, can get out of bed on my own, but having a hard time with my vitaimins, as most of them has to be crushed before taking. Also having a hard time eating/drinking the protein drinks as well as water, not hungry but my stomach rumbles otherwise. Lost 7 pounds so far and I am so happy to write to you all back, missed ya!

Will see my surgeon on the 29th and thinks im going to be home longer, insteada of 3 weeks maybe 4.

Had the "sleeve" done.. I survived the "Hospital"

Hey socalmom-Congratulations on your surgery! Hang in there. The first few weeks can be tough but each day will be better than the one before. It is important that you get up and walk, walk, walk and that you keep your fluids going-sip, sip, sip. Glad to hear you are back. Keep us posted on your progress. best-

Congrats on the surgery!! Now you have that behind you and you can concentrate on everything else. I know that's a relief to have the procedure done and not to be constantly thinking about it anymore. Good luck on your new journey!
