Default Hello from Ontario.

Hi Everyone

My name is Jill I am about to turn 40 in just a few short weeks. I am a single parent of two lovely daughters. One just left to go off to University and the other has just started grade 11. Currently I am unemployed (thank you economic downturn) but actively looking for work. So surviving!

Two years ago I stepped on a scale and weighed 323 pounds. I cried. I knew I was hovering close to the 300 mark for a long time but didn't think I had surpassed it. I had heard of gastric bypass lots of different time good stories and bad stories. But the good stories out weighed the bad ones. I called my doctor and said I want to be referred. She told me no one does that in Toronto. I then sited an article I had seen in the paper not so long ago and gave her the doctor's names that were mentioned there. I got an appointment to see someone spent 2 hours in a waiting room. He looked at me..asked some questions and then put me on a list that could take up to 3 years. He said well you are waiting do you want to see this nutritional doctor. I was like sure what ever..I just want to healthy. Another 3 months before I could get an appointment to see this new doctor. Well Ive been seeing him for just under 2 years now. I am down to 245 pounds. He diagnosed me with depression gave me medication for that and medication for diabetes. I have been watching my food however my "diet" has not changed all that much.

Now yesterday I was in to see him and he is now recommending that I go through with the gastric bypass. He said that he worries more and more for my health and that by getting this done it would be better for me.

I agreed to start the process but with the option to back out if I needed to.

I am going to spend the next few weeks doing some more research. Thus the reason for me joining this site. I've already read some success stories so am definitely inspired by them.

So thank you for allowing me to join and for reading novel..lol.

Jill

Welcome Jill. I'm across the 'pond' (Ontario) from you, near Rochester, NY. I had an awesome surgeon and I know that he has some people coming here from Canada. It took me 8 months, start to finish to get my surgery, my surgiversary is 11/4 and I'm down 101 pounds last I checked.

It's great that you were able to lose nearly 80 pounds on your own. That's commendable.

Anyway, if there's nothing in Toronto, you might want to check here in the states. I know it's a bit of a drive, but it might be worth it in the long run. I've also met people from Buffalo and Hamilton, Ontario that had it done too. I find it hart to believe there are no bariatric surgeons in Toronto. Such a big city, you'd think there'd at least be one. I did a google and found a couple of sites that do lapband, so you might want to check those out as well.

Good luck with your journey and feel free to PM me anytime.

Welcome to TT Jill!! I'm so proud of you for losing weight on your own while you were waiting. I've been waiting 14 months and I'm ashamed of myself that I didn't lose weight during that time. Mostly because of my chronic pain putting limits on what I can do, but I know I shouldn't let it.

I'm so glad you're here and I hope you make us a big part of your support system. There's a lot of amazing people here and a wealth of information. *hug*

I took the bull by the horns today and called the surgeon that I had talked to two years ago. Updated my info. Then she gave me the number to call the dietitian/social worker and the internal medicine people. So maybe this will happen sooner?

Hi Jill, It took me a long time to decide to go ahead with WLS but when you make the decision it seems all you can think of is...ok let's do it already.

Jill, I live in Montreal Quebec and I know the struggle with waiting for a surgeon. I've been on a waiting list for over 2 years for one surgeon and waiting to see another surgeon possibly in November. All this only for a consultation. If you are interested in coming into Montreal for your surgery, I know that with the new regulations with OHIP (Ontario Health Ins.) you are eligible for surgery here and it will be covered by OHIP. You will actually be able to get the surgery sooner than me since you're from Ontario.

This is Dr.Christou's link:Weight Loss Surgery » Home

Within this site he states:

The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care of Ontario (through OHIP) will pay for gastric bypass surgery for Ontario patients at our private facility in Montreal. Once approved, Ontario patients can have their surgery within 4-6 weeks, the time required to properly prepare them for safe surgery. To get this approval you need to contact your physician and ask to be referred to the Regional Assessment Center

I do wish you much luck and welcome.

Ada
