Default Hello all

Hi, I'm new to this forum as of today. I'm scheduled for RxNY on July 27th and am very excited. I've spent quite a bit of time browsing around and have found a wealth of information and inspiration. I love the success stories but also appreciate hearing about the struggles. 25 days to go!!!

Hi Nexxus! Congratulations on finding the BEST internet source for information and support regarding weight loss surgery (aka WLS).

I sure like what you said above, that you appreciate hearing about the struggles. Trust me when I say that THOSE posts are the most important ones!

Best to you on your impending surgery date, and be strong with your liquid diet (if you have one coming up).

I'm 7 years postop, and even this far out I benefit from this forum.

Thanks guys! I'm excited about my surgery but also worried about how much my relationship with food is going to change. I mean once that crutch is disabled what else is there? LOL

My dietitian has told me that follow up and support groups are one of the best ways to be and stay successful on this journey and I believe that to be true with all of my heart.

Hi Nexxus, welcome to Thinner Times.

You made a great statement: Once that crutch is disabled, what else is there?

Be aware that a situation known as addiction transfer exists for surgically slim persons. If one has an unhealthy relationship with food now and is not aware of these addictions, if not addressed, ones addictions may continue post-op. If one struggles post-op, it is important that one considers therapy before a new addiction takes hold.

I've read that the best success post-op where addiction pre-op was a problem is that people post-op became addicted to life and activity rather than alcohol, gambling, shopping, or drugs. Since food was a comfort pre-op, and yes, it was mine, I must make healthy choices in what gives me comfort post-op.

It's not always easy. I work from home. I must keep all contraband foods out of my house in order not to fall back into old habits. But for comfort now, I take a walk. I live in a rural area - a nice leisurely walk with my dog, being outside, communing with nature and neighbors, always knowing that a short time ago, I couldn't walk 10 feet without back pain, knee pain, foot pain, and losing breath, is my ultimate comfort.

Oh, THAT and bubble baths! because now, getting in and out of the bathtub is a piece of sugar-free cake...

Oh, THAT and a movie! because now, I can fit into the theater seats...

Oh, THAT and bowling! because now, I have an activity I can share with my son...

etc.

Make a list of what you look forward to, and focus on those changes. Become addicted to life and living.

BTW: your dietitian is spot on!

All my best,

Starting BMI: 60.4 / Current BMI: 33.6

Nearly 16 TEN pound bowling balls down... OMG, let me pinch myself!

I don't want to know how much I have left to lose -- I find it encouraging to see how far I've come!
