Default You guys are amazing!

Seems like you have all been where I am. I have always heard that your first instinct is usually the right one. My decision is made, I guess I just needed a little reinforcement and I am so thankful for each of you that have shared with me and have given me that reinforcement.

Gastric bypass was my first choice, and has been for many years. Only till recently have I even considered the band. And honestly, only because others were advising it.

Bottom line is that I know my body, inside and out. I know my mind, my spirit and my willingness to make this work. I am educated on the good and bad of both options. And I know that once I step forward and voice my decision to my friends and family without faltering, the support and encouragement will follow.

I loved the post that said, "I need the support, encouragement, and prayers now, not just on the day of surgery". That statement is so very true.

With that said, I look forward to an Aug 31st surgery date for gastric and a healthier me very soon.

Now it's time to start testing ways to increase protein in my post surgery diet. I will need 75-90 grams per day. Any suggestions??

Oh, one other thing. I do not have a physically stressing job, lots of ups and downs from computer to patient room and back again, but thats about it. I have only asked for 2 weeks off, but can take more if needed? Can you share your thoughts on that also?

And again, thanks everyone! You are proof that there are angels among us!

Leigh Ann, I also have a desk job and only took a week off from work and I was fine with that. I think two weeks would be enough time, but you know yourself better than anyone.

I pretty much work at my desk or drive in a car. I only took a week and a half of for surgery and that was fine, so two weeks should be good. If you worked the floor taking care of patients (pulling, lifting, rolling them over) I would say take more time of. I know if I was still a floor nurse, I definitely would have taken off longer. You did say that you work in healthcare right? Or was that someone else (sometimes posts run together)? And I agree with you, your first instinct is usually the right one. Trust your gut, it usually doesn't steer you wrong. Good luck with your decision. And welcome to the board!!

First Instinct,... live and learn. I'm old enough to know that I should gone with my gut. The WLS journey can be an emotional roller coaster of not thinking clearly, too much/not enough information and the pull and tug of those close to you. I applaud your clarity.

Although there may be a lot of people that will be affected by WLS, whether they agree with you or not, the bottom line is always YOU. Stay focused.

Time off,... if you have the ability to take more time off, do it if you need it. 2 weeks will most likely be just fine, especially that your job isn't a hopping or lifting one.

As for protein,... be aware that what protein supplement source you like today may not appeal to you post-op. So don't stock up too much on shakes and powders.

I didn't have a problem with any powder source I tried, but others find some of them revolting.

Your main protein source immediately post-op will be shakes. When you get to the liquid/mushy food stage, more food proteins will be available in the form of soups, but not in huge amounts until you get into more textured foods like tuna fish salad, chicken salad, ground beef, etc.

Suggestion: Look for a heat stable unflavored protein powder you can add to soups, hot drinks, oatmeal - by the sprinkle (too much thickens) - that does not change the flavor of the soup. A good one is Optimum Nutrition Any Whey unflavored protein powder.
