intro
Hello - I'm wondering if anyone suffers pain/numbness in hands and feet while suffering chronic obesity? My hubby has had it + obesity and it is gotten so much worse in the last year. He is only 44. His mother has the same extremity pain/numbness and she is obese too. Her pain and numbness didn't start when she was in her 40s though, because she wasn't as heavy as my hubby. Obviously, hubby is very concerned and we have gone to Weight loss surgery seminars. He is motivated, his health suffers quite a bit - GERD, sleep apnea, pain/numbness in feet and hands, etc. He has been seeing a primary care doctor this year, which is great!!
Anyway, thanks and ill stay in touch

Prior to surgery, I had numbness in my arms and hands when sleeping. During the day, when walking my lower legs would get constricted and cut off circulation from about mid-calf down into my feet. Not sure if any of this is the same as your hubby's or if his is constant...but since having the surgery and loosing the weight, I no longer have these problems.
I still have a lump along the side of my calf, down toward my ankle on the right side - which is the spot that used to get stiff and constrict badly causing my foot to go numb, but it doesn't act up any more. I've had a doc look at it, but they didn't have anything to say about it. Just thought it was a little oddity.
It sounds like your husband does have some co-morbidites that are typically required as precursors to having the surgery (and insurance companies covering some of the cost), so if it's something you're looking into, it may be an option for him. Going to your GP is the best first step to the process. They may be able to recommend a Gastric Bypass or Banding center. Be sure to do plenty of research for your area. Finding a program that is all inclusive with a nutritionist, psychologist, physical therapist, surgeon, and a nurse practitioner is the best route. Those that only have a surgeon involved tend to have a lower success rate.
I gotta run - but keep us posted, K?

I did have numbness in my feet. Actually, I still can't feel my feet much. When I get massages, I tell them to dig into my feet because they are so numb from being fat for so long. I mean, I can feel them, just don't have much sensation in them.

Welcome to Thinner Times, banditry90.
I didn't suffer numbness, but my husband did, and still does, but it's getting much better. He didn't have GBP, he's losing weight on his own along with me and my diet. When I had my surgery he was 362 and is now 270, 14 months later, hoping to drop 50 more by year's end.

I don't want to know how much I have left to lose -- I find it encouraging to see how far I've come!
