Smile Hi

Hi All,

I am 7, almost 8 months post surgery. (yeah for me)...I feel great, had no complications, but am now having an issue. Am wondering if anyone else out there is having the same problem. I went for my 6 month check up and was told that my iron was low and that I needed to take an iron suppliment. I started taking the iron which in turn bound me up (was having no issues prior), so I started to take 1/2 the dosage of iron (figuring that 1/2 was better than none). None, I no longer have any regular bowel movements. It is always soft and I always feel like I have to go. Does anyone have any recommendations for me?

Thanks Amy

Amy,

Iron supplements can cause constipation.

Carbonyl iron is one form that seems to be well tolerated by WLS people. I take it every day and have no issues with constipation etc. and I know many others here do too.

Celebrate Vitamins has carbony iron + vitamin C in pill and chewable form (vitamin C helps the body absorb iron): Bariatric Vitamins | Gastric Bypass Vitamins | Celebrate Bariatric Vitamins

Bariatric Advantage has carbonyl + C too: http://www.bariatricadvantage.com/catalog?cat=Iron

You can buy plain old carbonyl tablets - they aren't big. You might have to hunt for them or maybe your pharmacist could order some for you. I use Sundown brand.

The tablets are also available from vitalady.com - called "tender iron": Vitalady.com - Protein Supplements, Vitamins & Minerals and Safe Snacks!

You just need to remember to take some vitamin C with the tabs to aid iron absorption.

Hi Corrine,

Thanks for the tip. I have just placed my first order with the company. Hopefully all will work out.

Welcome Amy.

I've been on iron (18 mg / day, double during periods) since post-op. I had an issue of a metallic taste in the beginning which made food taste awful. I took the iron every other day for a few weeks, and then went back to everyday and the metallic taste disappeared.

I take Building Blocks Iron.

I also NOW take chewable fiber (Benefiber), I started this regimen two weeks ago, and the BM's have been much better.

Nearly 16 TEN pound bowling balls down... OMG, let me pinch myself!

I don't want to know how much I have left to lose -- I find it encouraging to see how far I've come!
