Hi all,
I've been lurking for a couple weeks. Just wanted to introduce myself. I started considering gastric bypass a month ago. Before that I had a lot of fear. It was all based on my father who had it. He was over 500 lbs and had gastric bypass a couple years ago, he has lost over 200 lbs. But now is gaining the weight back, eating all his old foods, pretty much killing himself. Refuses to get support and has turned to other addictions, pain killers and some illegal drugs. Anyway, I always said I will NEVER have surgery.
So last month I was diagnosed with HBP at 30 yrs old! And I have 2 young children at home that I worried I might not be around to see them graduate. So I started researching about it secretly, hiding it from my husband. It was funny, I would sit and read the books, trying to hide the titles. But have you all noticed how all the weight loss surgery books have "weight loss surgery" HUGE on the side and front As I researched, I started to feel much more confortable about the surgery, no fear, just a lot of hope that there might be a solution for me.
So I finally admitted to my husband, a week later, that I was thinking about it. He said he already knew, he saw the books. So we talked about it alot. I shared all my research, he was surprised how much thought I put into it. Then he was willing to go to the free seminar at one of the hospitals. I was SO grateful for the support.
Insurance covers the surgery, just need a referral from PCP. She has done that. Now just waiting on the surgeon to set up a appointment.
I'm excited about this forum, it has been a HUGE help in my decisions so far. Thank you!

Dawn

Welcome. I am also fairly new. My surgery was almost a month ago. It has been an exciting journey. Good luck to you!

Hi Dawn and welcome to Thinner Times.

Your dad is a perfect example of what NOT to do. Learn from his mistakes. Too many people have this surgery thinking it's a magic fix. It's not, it's simply a tool. It sounds like you understand that, which is a good thing.

You said you'd been reading a lot of WLS books. Did you read "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies" yet? That's my favorite one. It's a easy read, and gives a lot of good info.

Hi, Dawnmarie

I just finished the book Sherry recommended and it certainly does have a lot of good info, without all the medical terminology. Everything is given in plain language. A great resource!

Good luck on your journey!

Wow, It sound like you dad has been through a lot and it sounds like he has put his self through a lot. I hope that you will make the best decision for you self. I am in my first week out from surgery, and I will tell you it is a little tough, but I still belive that I have made the best choice for my life and my health. These next four weeks seem like forever for me, but I know that it is really all down here from her. I just take it a day at a time. I do have one question I know that this surgery is a tool, but I can't understand how you dad is able to really eat that much, has he strected his stomach. Im sure that can 't be good. Anyway good luck and make sure that when you make you choice that you are make your choice for youself and that you are doing what is best for you. Good Luck and let me know how it goes. Delane.
