Welcome both of you! When I was 26 I was offered this surgery. I didnt do it. Stupid reasons why really, but it came down to me thinking i was a failure for doing it.. especially so early in my life. At the time I was around 300 lbs. Well 5 years and yo yos from 260-340 i finally decided that I couldnt win this fight without heavy artilary. Thats why i decided to go for surgery. I wanted Lapband first, thought it was safer and more doable. But after learning that lapband requires the same resistance and willpower as a diet essencially, i had to go for Gastric. It has been a tough 1 month with recovery. Still not 100% but getting there quickly now that all foods are on my table. Whatever you decide to do. Do the research! The book weightloss surgery for dummies is AWESOME. I used it for decisions, and diet plans and overall its like my bible! I got mine at books a million but other book stores have them. Or order online!
Good luck and if you have any questions please feel free to private message (PM) me!

Thanks Heather! That is my thinking I rather do it now while I am “young” lol I have my family (twins and hubby) and they are supporting me. My insurance “seems” to say it’s a go if I follow their little 6 requirements. Why not right?

My biggest question to everyone: I don’t know where to post it but why did you elect the surgery you asked for since there are a couple variations of it.

you can post anything anywhere, but pre op is pretty much the best place to do so. That question has been asked so i would try to find it, or you can repost!

BTW, mine was laproscopic as well. Thats important to know if your doc does it. Insurances can be hard, mine was really easy, i only had about 6 requirements and most were bloodwork and history.

Thanks for all the info Heather. That is good to know. I will look into getting that book and I am of course curiouse to know the difference between the gastro and lapband. The side effects of each. I hope to hear more from you and Nichol.
Nichol, once you figure out what it is you want to do, let me know.

Lapband quickie- A band inserted around the top of the stomach to create your pouch. It is adjusted over time to allow more or less food to pass.

Done laproscopically, you will have a port to allow for adjustments.

Limits amounts of foods, but not necessarily what you eat. Thats a downside as you have to basically still be on a diet per say. You have to have discipline. noted as a safer choice since there is no rerouting of the stomach or intestines.

RNY Roux en Y Gastric bypass.- done either laproscopically or open incision.

This surgery limits the amounts of foods and types of foods by creating a new pouch and stapling it from the old. (this depends on the surgeon on actual procedure). Your intestines are re routed to allow food to pass from your new pouch as well as your old stomach.

This food limits drastically what you can eat. Recovery is harder because your diet and activity is limited more by internal healing as well as external. You will have to limit fats and sugars as you will experience "dumping syndrome" if you over consume these types of foods or beverages. I have not had this happen, but its not a pretty picture as your body instantly pushes the food out no matter how it gets there. Major sickness like sweating and its not pleasent.

Open surgeries have alot more complications possible because of hernias and so on.

Hope this helps!
