It's about intake and output - not just carbs. Although having said that, reducing/eliminating your bad carbs is a good start.
Based on your sex, height, weight, age and activity level, this site will give you an indication of your daily calorie needs - it's not exact but it's a good place to start:

It's important that you start recording
everything you eat and drink. I use fitday.com but there are others like daily plate, sparkspeople etc.
To lose weight, you need to reduce your calorie intake. For example, if you cut back your calories by around 500 a day, you will lose around 1lb per week. But you need to kick up your exercise at the same time.
