Newbie seeking advice and support
Hi to everyone, my name is Joan and I had bypass surgery on the 16th Dec 08
Friends and family told me to wait until after Xmas but I did not want to wait and add another 7lbs to my weight!! It has been hard but I am getting there - it is now five weeks and I have lost an amazing 33lbs. . Although I am ecstatic about the weight loss, I am so worried about my diet, in particular the protein and fluid intake. I am still on fairly soft foods at the moment and have tried things like egg and fish but cant keep them down! I do try to chew well but still struggle with slowing down (I hate cold food). Just starting to get my head around portion size but currently wondering if I will ever eat solid food again!!
As for fluids..I work on community at the moment and I am really bad about keeping up my fluid intake, I miss it when I am eating as well and just dont remember to drinks an hour later.
Ok, shared my joy and my downs - I am really glad to have found this forum for help and support - any advice would be gratefully received,
Joan

Hi Joan
Well done!! I am 2 years RNY post op and have lost 120kgs to date.
Don't be too worried about not eating fish and eggs, it took me months before I could eat eggs and then only cooked a certain way. Fish only just started tolerating and meat is still a no go for me unless it is reconstituted. It all takes time - a friend who is 4 years post op has only been able to eat meat in the last year.
Just take it easy with food, it's all down to trial and error.

Hi Joan,
Don't worry so much about it yet, you're only 5 weeks out! I'm just over 1 year out, down 100lbs and trust me, I had the same problems! Boiled potatoes (with a dab of ketchup), tuna with light mayo on crackers, and boiled eggs were my best friends the first 2 months...You will be fine!!! It does take time to adjust, but things will fall into place. It's all trial and error...you have to try adding new things to your meals...I still have a hard time eating any breads (didn't eat any for 9 months and when I tried it was TOUGH)...Just remember that this is a new tummy, it's like being a baby all over again...you gotta start with liquids, then move to soft solids, then you can start introducing more solids to your diet...Sometimes, it may not sit well, my advice, try the same food again in a week...you might be surprised!
Good luck!!!
I'm here if you ever need anything!

Hi Joan,
Early out, I would forget to drink enough as well.. (I still struggle with this issue somewhat!)
I used to use a kitchen timer to remind me to start drinking.. I'd set it for 30 minutes after a meal and then every 15 minutes thereafter until it was time to stop so I could eat a meal.
I also had a desk job and so at work, I used outlook reminders to tell me to drink- take my vitamins- walk.. it worked well for the most part.
As for the cold food.. I'm with you on hating the cold stuff. I used a baby plate for a little while.. one that you add really hot water to the base and it keeps the food warmer, longer.. and also, I would warm up my plate in the oven sometimes. This seemed to be an issue only in the fairly early stages post-op.. I'd say by the third month, neither of these things were necessary.

Hi Joan! I had my surgery Jan 5, and I am now able to eat soft foods - I have found that egg WHITES are very good and I can hold them down. You may be able to buy straight egg whites at the grocery store. If not, just sift out the yoke when you crack the egg. I add some garlic powder, onion powder, and sometimes lemon pepper and then scramble them with some low cal margerine. hope this was helpful and good luck!!

Godspeed your recovery Joan
I had surgery just after you - on Dec 31. Im down 32 thus far and am able to tolerate eggs, but not fish. I did have VSG not RnY, and that procedure tends to be more tolerant. Im not tolerant of overfilling Nubbin (my pouch). If he gets too full he hurls it back at me. So Im adjusting my eye as to how big the portion to be eaten is.
I also detest cold food, but when only eating five ounces it doesnt have much time for cooling.
Welcome to the forum.

Most of us are still guilty of this I hurled up my Spaghetti Bolognaise last night 'cos I ate too much of it. Your eyes rarely adjust

Welcome, Joan, we are so glad to have you here. I have been back at work 1 1/2 weeks now and the water thing is a challenge, I agree. I just try to compensate when I get home. I am able to eat all kinds of soft foods, had a Lean Cuisine chicken enchilada and a yogurt for dinner, cup of chili with cheese for lunch and cream of wheat for breakfast. I really don't feel deprived at all so far. Hang in there!
