Default Questions lap band qualifications

Hi, My first posting!!! I really want to have the lapband done, my question is I am 5 feet tall and weigh 192lbs. I am a yo-yo dieter and dont have much documentation to prove over the past 5 years my highest weights. Do all insurance companies want 5 years history? I have Amerihealth Adminitrators PPO and when I called them they would not give me a straight answer, they said that we would have to submit preauth and wait...Any advise?

No, not all require a 5 year history of attempted weight loss. Mine required a 6 month medically supervised weight loss program.

I would call again and see if you can talk to someone who will give you a straight answer what their criteria is. If they have a website you may be able to find it there too. I know that's where I found the info for my insurance. I just did a search on the site for weight loss surgery or bariatric surgery.

Your pcp may also have an idea if he/she has referred patients for lapband before. Also most surgeon's offices have someone who deals with the insurance end of all of this.

My insurance provider, Anthem, only requires that I have had a physical within the last six months, psych eval and nutritional consult.

I have Amerihealth HMO and the wait time is like 5-7 days. I have been told our insurance is one of the easy ones. I am awaiting approval at this time. I am not getting the band however from what I understand only a preauthorization from your surgeon along with Psych eval, Nut eval, Endocospy, letter from PCP stating they recommend BS, and any combos (type 2, sleep apena etc). With your weight and height, BMI may be a deciding factor. Have you gotten check up yet? Good Luck on your journey
