Okay... here goes...
Hi everyone. I've been lurking here for a couple of weeks and am now getting up the courage to post. I'm a bit shy when encountering new people, but after reading most of the forum here I've begun to feel really comfortable. Thank you for that. I'm the only obese person I know (5'10" - 330 lbs.) both in my family and at the workplace. There aren't many people around me that understand what I'm going through except for possibly my husband. Not because he's obese, but just because he's been here with me. I found this place (TT) right after I finally called and made an appt. with a surgeon. I want lap-band surgery because I feel like that's what's best for me, and I wanted to see what others said about it so that's when I found this sight. I've been very happy with what I've found, and now I'm a thousand times more certain than I already was. Thank you for that. I see the doctor for the first time on Saturday (8/2) and I'm so excited and maybe a little nervous. I'm lucky in that my insurance covers the surgery if it's medically necessary. (high blood pressure, high triglycerides, pcos, painful joints and feet, etc.....) Anyway... I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself and maybe collaborate on some things as I go through my journey. Thanks.

hey welcome. what doctor are you using? what side of houston are you in?
as for your surgery it is your choice which one you get but with your weight i would seriously think about the bypass or sleeve. i had the lapband and now i am about to be revised to bypass. with the band they don't expect you to lose as much as you would with bypass. but like i said it is absolutely your choice, but i would talk with your doctor about it.
again, welcome

I'm going to Dr. Pina in Baytown. I haven't talked to the doctor or anything, but at this point, I don't feel comfortable with rearranging my insides. That may change, but for now that's how I feel.
Nice to see someone else from Baytown!

I too am new and have been lurking for several weeks and this is my first post. But, I have to say that I agree with tx mom. I am 5'3" and 300lbs and my surgeon told me that if your BMI is higher than a certain level (and I can't remember what number he said) then the band really wouldn't work. But, your surgeon may tell you something different. I would wait to talk to him before making your final decision on which procedure to have.

Hi all! I'm new too. Just got my 1st appt date to a Endo Doc at the Mayo Clinic but it isn't until Oct 1st. Seems so far away. I'm nervous too but more about failing again then the surgery. I just had my thyroid removed this last March and bounced back pretty quick. Hoping for the same after this. Not looking forward to the pain after the surgery but I am hoping it will be worth it in the long run.

Well, like I said, I haven't been to the doc yet, so as for now lapband is what I'm interested in. You're right, he may tell me something different. We'll have to wait and see.
txmom, yes, I've lived in Baytown my entire life.

Welcome!
I too am 5'10" and started out at 317 lbs. I had gastric bypass in April of '07 and, as of this morning, weigh 164 lbs. When I had to decide about banding or GBP, I decided if I was going to go for it, I was going all the way. GPS was right for me, but definitely talk to your doctor to learn what's right for you.
Good Luck!

Welcome to both of you!
There is a quiz that you can take to test your knowledge about each proceedure on this site. You might give it a whirl, you might just learn something you did not know.
Best of luck!
