Thinking about bypass..
Hi all, I am currently thinking about gastric bypass and am probably going to have it done overseas. As I work overseas as a contractor with the DOS my insurance covers me worldwide. I have been talking to a company called Medjourneys and they have a program where I can get the procedure done in India. They will fly me from Dubai, UAE and my fiance from Boston, Ma to meet me. I will have the procedure performed by a Indian Doctor that is accredited in the US and has a very good list of credentials from his time in the US, that so far check out. For the entire operation including all tests,,procedures hospitalization, minimum 5 days in the private hospital and airfare for us both they are going to charge me 12,200 US dollars. It even includes the private guest house we will stay in after my discharge with private nurses visits and a private car at our disposal. I think this is a great deal, and from what I have read India hospitals are on par with US and British. My insurance will pick up the medical part of the charges. Has anyone else had this procedure done overseas or any other experiences having things done on a so called medical-tourism type situation?

Hi,
This sounds great, except you should find out about the after care that you will recieve (and who can give it to you back in the US) sometimes in the UK anyway hospitals can refuse aftercare to pateints who have had surgery abroad. Also find out how long you are staying in india after surgery as apparently travel afterwards is quite painful and on a plane for hours might not be good for you.
Get as much info as possible before making th decision.

I agree with Vicci. Make sure you find somebody back in the states that will see you when you get back before you get the surgery.

Hi Meyers. Medjourneys is a good company to help you go to Inida. Healthbase is expeirenced too, as is Wockhardt Hospitals, check them out. However, you may find it less stressful to go nearer to home - Mexico is a common destination for gastric surgery, and many of the most pre-eminent surgoens practicing in the field of obestiy surgery are in Puerto Vallarta and Tijuana. My company Health Travel Guides can help you decide - if you want a quote, or would like to speak with a patient of one of these surgones, I'd be very happy to help you. Sandra@healthtravelguides.com

I should add, Meyers, that the surgeons we work with are proctors for the American companies Johnson and Johnson & Tyco, the companies that manufacture the surgical materials used in obesity surgery. And while there is certainly no harm in focusing on American-trained surgeons abroad, this is not the only measure of a good surgeon. Our own Mayo Clinic features many surgeons educated and trained abroad. Let me know if we can help you, if only to get a comparison quote that helps you make your decision. Whatever you decide, good luck!

I have really enjoyed the doctor and hospital care I received by Dr. Carlos Quesada in Costa Rica. You can check him out at: Gastric Bypass Surgery costa rica, Costa Rica (CR) Gastric Bypass Surgery (Gastric Bypass Surgery), Lowest Prices Doctors, Best Price doctors, Gastric Bypass Surgery, Compare doctors, Lowest Cost,. I stayed in Costa Rica at a recovery center for two weeks before and after my surgery. I had a previous LAP Band removed and a mini-gastric bypass performed. There are several good recovery centers in San Jose. Casa de la Mariposa, Casa De La Mariposa - the finest plastic surgery recovery retreat in Costa Rica and CheTica Ranch, Costa Rica Recovery Center - CheTica Ranch.

Low cost weight loss at a glance
The gastric banding surgery is shaping up as a safe and reliable alternative to gastric bypass and offers great chances of successful weight loss control for the adolescent. Along with weight loss, gastric banding also leads to healthy changes in blood sugar and blood fats. Mexico is emerging as a hub for low cost lap band surgery and low cost wieght loss surgery. The surgeries in Mexico cost a fraction of the cost in the U.S. and what's more patients who have been there mostly come back with a good review. You can check this page, has some links to videos where people talk about their mexico experience: Cost of Lap Band Surgery | Mexico, Costa Rica, India, Belgium | Lap Band Specials |Price of Gastric Band Packages| Lap Band Surgery Cost
