Congratulations to you both! It's a life-changing decision, but in a good way!
In my opinion, your "tastes" change because of what you can tolerate. For example, I LOVED bread prior to surgery. Bread despises me now. It hurts and I get sick if I eat sticky, doughy bread. BUT, as much as I loved bread, for some odd reason, I do not miss it. Sort of like an unhealthy relationship. Bread doesn't treat me well, so I walked away and found other, better, healthier things to replace it. I DO NOT feel deprived. I still eat what I want (starting with protein, then vegs, etc.). I just eat a lot less of it.
This is not a "diet." Don't tell yourself you will never, ever have another bit of chocolate or another sip of wine. All things in moderation! They say the first bite of food is the best...it is true! One small bite of dessert is so satisfying now. My first "real" meal after surgery was on April 12th (11 days post) for my birthday. I had two yummy bites of marinated, grilled salmon, a 1/4 of a deviled egg and a couple of bites of s/f banana cream pie (made with fresh bananas and sugar-free pudding). It was the best meal ever, and completely satisfying. I did have a glass of white wine that day too (isn't that a clear liquid? ;-)
You will experiment, you will learn about your new body, and you will undoubtedly get sick and discover new (and replacement) foods. It's an adventure!
Best of luck to you!
