Smile Welcome

Hi Casper,
I think it depends on how much weight you have to loss and what foods you prefer, from what i have gathered the bypass is better suited to those with a sweet tooth....ME
Did your surgeon not ask you your eating habits and advise which procedure he feels is best?

For me the RNY was the best choice. I just know myself, and I wouldn't be as successful with the band....also, the idea of going for fills didn't thrill me. I What if you change jobs, will your insurance always cover these fills? If I were you I'd research and see what's best for YOU...everyone is different. Even though I had complications, I'm still very glad I had the RNY. Good luck to you!! I'm sure you will make the right choice based on your needs.

Hi Casper,

My surgeon told me that it really depends on what your eating habits are like and you personal preference I thought the RYN gastric bypass would be best for me as i have around 11 stone to loose. If you do more research on both options you'll come to a decision that suits you best try BOSPA - The British Obesity Surgery Patient Association it may help with any questions about the procedures.

Hope that helps a little

hi - it's avery individual decision, so be sure to research well and consult several experienced surgeons.
you may wish to also join ObesityHelp.com to access a huge amt of info, and ask any questions. Ask specific questions on the band forum and on the bypass forum, and you'll gt lots of good info.
Good luck in your decision! All forms of WLS require effort on our parts, many changes, and commitment.

few people really need 2 weeks off, in my experience. the usual is more like 3-5 days. i returned easily in 3 days, but we're all different, of course.
but if you have the time, take it! Lots to learn and change.

re a sweet tooth being better suited to the bapass, this is not true. That was once thought, but has ince been disproven by studies reported about 2 yrs ago by dr. dixon in australia.

Only about 70% of bypass people ever "dump' and most of those get used to sweets, so can consume them again, even if they should not.

One of the biggest problems with the bypass pouch is that it so easily stretches out within 18-24 mionths, and then people must resort to the same severe dieting and exercise forever to maintain weight - just what none of us could do before. This is the same problem with the sleeve.
the band, however, is always there to help is control our eating. that's why i chose the band, and have been very successful in both losing, and now maintaining for more than 4 yrs so far.

The lapband also has problems, slippage of the band, and port problems, etc.. neither way is perfect..

For me, the idea of a port that always is there was a HUGE negative. The fact that on average, a person with a lapband loses less of the excess weight than one with GBP was also a negative for me. Always having to have the doc fiddle with the fills and trying to find the right one.. the fact that it is far easier to sabotage oneself with the lapband vs. the GBP was another negative. Then in my own personal search, I found too many people who've had the band and then had a revision to the full GBP which just pushed me over to the RNY GBP right from the start.
