Welcome Auntie Foo! I'm in the middle of this process and hoping to have my surgery before the Fall. It's great that you have a friend that went through it already. I have a good friend who did it too. I originally thought she was crazy for doing it. I had been on Weight Watchers before she had the surgery and was losing--eventually lost 45 pounds. Well, now she's down 112 pounds and I've gained back the 45 plus about another 10 because I quit smoking. I can't smoke anymore (lungs got messed up), nor do I want to. So, I started talking to my friend about it and she inspired me. She looks fantastic. I thought heck, if she can do it, so can I. She has introduced me to a couple of her friends, one who has lost over 80 pounds since October '07 and the other who is having her surgery next month. It's great to have people who have been there to talk to.

This site is also a good support system. Best of luck with your endeavor.
