Chrissy how much weight are you starting out at and what is your height? With diabetes and not knowing anything else I would say gastric bypass.

I have diabetes too and here's what happened for me that caught me by surprise.. going into surgery my level was 160 - high but not too high.. coming out for the next 48 hours they were over 300 and they had to give me insulin (which I have never taken before!) however, they told me it was the trauma of the surgery that instigated that. From a week out my levels have been dropping dramatically - without meds - 130's then 124 and now 103 even after I eat.. I am glad I did it and I would do it again in a heartbeat... there is a lot of media fuss atm about how rny seems to have great outcomes for diabetics (not same data for lap band btw) and that is the MAIN reason I ended up choosing bypass over lap band..
I read a lot of the stuff out there that's negative too - it's good to be informed... having a good doc with a good track record; following the plan religiously (ie: food plan); and getting a lot of support seems to me the best way to avoid most of the pitfalls people go on about... it's a huge commitment, make sure you're ready because it is a door you walk through that closes forever behind you. keep posting and let us know how you're doing ![]()

Having had both Lapband and RNY, you have to know the post-op nutrition protocol for both because they're different.
(My Lapband was on for 2 weeks after which I had to have it removed...6 months ago. I just had the RNY last Tuesday). I did SOME research on RNY but my mind was set on Lapband and the Lapband influence was high. I know I personally needed surgical help as a tool (having reached 349) and the Lapband is what my family would support. I personally wanted the RNY to begin with but threw all my efforts in researching the Lapband procedure. I did find out however later, that many surgeons won't perform Lapband when the BMI is over 60 and/or the weight is over 300. Absolutely do thorough research on both procedures BECAUSE there are many people who have had extremely awesome results with Lapband, as well as RNY. BUT, if I were diabetic, I'd choose RNY, period. I've heard so many wonderful stories of the end of diabetes for 80% of RNY patients that RNY is being considered as a potential diabetes treatment (though not in the near future because only the morbidly obese fall into the acceptable reasons to perform RNY in the USA). Be informed through research and KNOW what both post-op futures require of you. I've been on this journey for 1 1/2 years since I attended my first seminar, and although life gave me a few lemons along the road, I'm finally on day one of making lemonade. On the road to my surgery, I've always have this in my mind, as was stuffed into me by my nutritionist: surgery is just a tool, no matter which you choose. Both require life changes to lose weight and to keep the weight off. Only you can determine why this tool is necessary for you, which one, and why or why not. Good luck to you! ! !
