Question So this is me :) Long winded as usual

So here I am. I guess the fact I even found this forum goes to show that I'm interested in the prospect of WLS.

Here's the Dealio. I've been "lumpy" all my life. I say lumpy because it feels better then saying fat. It helps to hide behind the humor of it, but I digress....

So here I sit, 26, Lumpy and unhappy with it. I'm 5'8" and at my biggest I weighed 275. That was 5 years ago. After picking up smoking and starting a waitressing job, not to mention all the marijuana I smoked, I got down to a squishy 210 with out any effort on my part...There lies my plateau.

Since those days, I've moved again, started working as a stylist, quit smoking both ciggarettes and Pot, and married a fabulous man who's trying his damnedest to tame me. And with all things concidered I've crept back up to 250.

Over the past year I've tried everything to peel the weight back off, but it seems my efforts only maintain my current weight rather than take anything off. I even tried combining dieting and excercise with Alli (the OTC version of Orlistat) I lost 10lbs but as soon as I could no longer afford the Alli, it came back.

More recently I tried The Zone which I think might have worked if the portions didn't leave me feeling starved. So now at my wits end I'm wondering if the LapBand might be for me. I figure if my stomach pouch were smaller, something like The Zone or any other diet might actually work because I won't feel starved or deprived. I understand the work involved and I'm not a completely sedentary person to begin with (I hike, backpack, kayak, etc) but would a Dr. feel it's right for me?

Which brings me to my conundrum...My husband and I want to have kids ASAP but after 2 miscarriages partially due to my weight I'm wondering which should come first, pregnancy or the Lap Band?

So those are my thoughts in a nutshell...any comments or advice???

I am not your pregnancy expert, however I wanted to welcome you to the forum and let you know that your story of dieting and gaining back is something I am familiar with. I have read posts here from members who waited to loose most of their weight before having their babies, mostly to give the baby a healthy environment to develope in. I can relate to much of your story. Have you started investigating your options for getting the surgery? It could really help you with knowing your options at this time.

Wishing you all the best, hope you come back and post often and keep us informed.

I don't know anything about the lapband, but you are still young and a lot of women are having children into their mid to late 30's. Maybe talk with your OBGYN and the surgeon. Get their ideas and suggestions.

Sorry if I'm not a lot of help, but welcome to the forum. There are a lot of folks here with a lot of good info. so keep asking!

I only recently acquired insurance so I'v done alot more thinking than acting since it's just now become a realistic option.

One thing I forgot to mention is that my husband is 12 years older than me and we're concerned about having children too late in his life.

Regardless thanks so much for the warm welcomes and advice Looks like I have some thinking to do!

Hey brand new on here but saw your post and had to chime in!! Everyone's journey is different with WLS and the emotional and physical changes we all go through. Look at my stats...there are people on here who lost that weight in a matter of months and it has taken me a little over a year. (I do have to say that I have gone from a 26/28 to a 14/16 if anyone counts inches around here!! LOL)
Regardless of what the scale says today for you or for me or what it says a year from now the best lesson I have learned emotionally in this whole journey is to be a healthy selfish. Speaking as a parent, my fiance and I will not have more children until I am at a healthy weight for me and baby. I need to learn how to make myself a priority so I can be a good mom for my son and any future children. Am I good person/mom/friend/fiance?? Yes BUT I cannot be all of those things if I am dead and do not take care of myself.
You and your husband have to do what's right for you. There have been a few lap band babies I've read about on Dr. Kuri's webpage. They unfil you enough to eat for you and baby, and sounds like these women just gain their healthy baby weight and take it right back off again.

Both of these events will be life changing for you and good luck to both! They both open doors that you can't even imagine until you experience them yourself!!

Default Thank You

Great advice, and I appreciate it. Looks like me and my husband have some discussing to do He's less interested in my getting surgery because he met me and likes me just fine at this size, but I have to convince him I need it for me, for us and for our future...

Ok, Manda, here is my perspective - from an "old" head, so to speak, and also from someone who has been on this journey for a while.....

This is a TOTAL journey, not just weight loss. While you go through it, you will have the opportunity to find YOU in there. There will be many adjustments along the way. Your being will change, believe me. It will be an adjustment for your husband as well (be sure and include him on yur ride).

My further opinion is that the two decisions you are facing are BOTH life changing, and to consider both of them simultaneously is daunting.

What is logical to ME, and that doesn't make it correct for YOU, is that you get healthy first, in order to be all you can be for your family (husband and future child/children). Give yourself a chance to be all you can be.

Regardless of your decisions, the very best to you!
